People: Images From The World (Cube Books) Review

This is a very small book (the pages are about 2″ by 2″). It can be hard to read the text, it’s so small; I must be getting old, I have to take my glasses off just to see the page numbers.

Because of the size of the book, the pictures are necessarily small, too. But it is very interesting to see just how much visual information can be crammed into such a small space–a lot!

I like the fact that it gives images of people from around the world, not just their facial or bodily appearance (there is a fair bit of that) but also their occupations, expressions of faith, etc. Truly does demonstrate the world’s diversity, which is a sight to behold in such a small space. Especially I recommend it for kids, and it seems appropriate for that audience, although there’s at least one picture of a bare-breasted tribesperson, if you care about that sort of thing.

I’m afraid I haven’t read the text except for the picture captions (which are absolutely essential. I’m not sure how much the text matters. It might to you. I skimmed some; looked liked blather, but I didn’t care. You buy a book like this for the pictures, not for the practically illegible text.

My 3-year-old absolutely adores this book, I think largely because of the size. I’m rating this four stars just because my 3-year-old loves this to pieces. But I like it a lot myself.

If there’s a problem I have with it, it’s that the cover started coming off (and needed immediate reinforcement) after some not-too-terribly-rough handling by said 3-year-old. The tiny caption size could have been increased without sacrificing anything except, maybe, a tiny bit of “style.”

People: Images From The World (Cube Books) Overview

This heart-warming addition to White Star’s renowned CubeBook series celebrates the differences–and the sometimes surprising similarities–between different world cultures. More than 500 slice-of-life photographs depict family, home life, celebrations, religion, food, travel, and the arts around the world. Babies, children, adults, and the elderly, engaged in everyday activities, are conveyed with affection and great attention to detail, the result being a unique collection of portraits that pay tribute to humanity. In a chapter on the family and children, readers witness tender moments between parents and their children that, regardless of the distinctive settings–which are as far-flung as Africa, Asia, and Europe–and the differing physical traits of each family, mirror each other closely. From rustic dwellings in rural India to apartments outfitted with every convenience in American cities, readers are taken into homes around the globe, and given a fascinating glimpse into the vastly differing lifestyles of people from around the world. Chapters on work, spirituality and rituals, food, and theater give further insight into the lives of others, with vibrant photographs conveying the traditions and daily activities that set us apart–and connect us, as well.

Math-terpieces Review

This was our first book by Greg Tang, and I loved it so much, and can not wait to get my hands on more of his books. My son loves math, and I am always looking for new ways to challenge his thinking about the subject. This book is by far the best I have come across for that type of reading. I love the fact that the author was able to take two subjects, math and art, and intertwine them so that kids are really learning about two things at one time. The rhyming verses that he uses to set up the clues for number groupings is very, very nice as well. It is a great concept book. You will love the art, and you will love the way he gets kids thinking about art through math, and visa versa. It makes math fun for kids. 5 HUGE stars for this book!

Math-terpieces Overview

In his most ground-breaking book since The Best Of Times (Fall 2002), Greg Tang underscores the importance of four basic rules in problem-solving. Keeping an open mind, looking for unusual number combinations, using multiple skills (like subtracting to add) and looking for patterns, will guarantee any child success in math. In Math- Terpieces, Tang continues to challenge kids with his innovative approach to math, and uses art history to expand his vision for creative problem-solving.

The Sewing Book Review

the GOOD:

1. pictures are great. easy to follow (when she takes the time to include enough step-by-step pictures).
2. looks nice. hardback. pink. pretty.
3. extensive. it has things in it some other books of mine don’t talk in detail about or mention at all (i.e. buttonhole hand-stitching)
4. i have been using this book as my first go-to book as i proceed to make a dress. it is a good first go-to guide

the BAD:

1. i still have to refer to other books on my bookshelf to get a better description of some things. (i.e. that buttonhole hand-stitching thing i mentioned before. her picture still left me with some questions so i had to refer to 2 other books until i found a better written explanation. then i had to practice on some other fabric since i had not done it before and had trouble at first understanding)
2. sometimes i like another book’s procedure better. when i need to install a lapped zipper for the first time, this book explained it fairly decently. but then i found a different procedure in another book that had more photos on how to do it AND i think the procedure sounds like it will produce a better result. i have not tried it yet, but it required more steps and i will do it on my actual dress. right now, i’m practicing on the muslin.

the UGLY:

1. have not found anything yet :)

The Complete Book of Pottery Making (Chilton’s Creative Crafts Series) Review

I reccomend this book to both begginers and experienced potters. It has many step-by-step black and white photos with great instructions. The photos have helped me perform techniques better and properly. There is a section on every method of working with clay and gives you solutions to problems. This book also gives great guides on buying clay, making a work space and many other opinions on how to become a professional potter. I don’t have a question about pottery that can’t be answered in this book.

Book the Job: 143 Things Actors Need to Know to Make It Happen Review

This is the ultimate must for any actor! Contemporary and up to date! For anyone just starting out in Los Angeles it is truly invaluable. Warhit takes his years of experience with actors and the business and turns them into a fabulous “how to” for the novice as well as the seasoned actor. This book covers it all. It takes you through the audition process: before, during and after; the business; acting technique, (a must have checklist for any scene or monologue); working on the set; and maybe most beneficial, “Breaking Free of Barriers”…the actors own “drama” that holds them back.

Any actor in L.A or thinking of moving to L.A should read this book! Any actor who wants to deepen their understanding of how to create unique and real characters should read this book. Any actor who wants to break free of their insecurities should read this book.

The greatest plus to reading this book is knowing that if you are in Los Angeles, you can actually STUDY with this master teacher, Doug Warhit. But even if you are not in LA you can rest assured that you have the next best thing! Every drama class in America should have this book on it’s curriculum.

Draw 50 Athletes: The Step-by-Step Way to Draw Wrestlers and Figure Skaters, Baseball and Football Players, and Many More… Review

This is probably one of the best in the “How to Draw series…” The pictures in this book are very easy to follow and results can be expected. The book seems to have a “thesis” if you will, the goal is to teach the patron how the muscles of the human body are to be drawn, and how they move in different actions and by the end of the book you can expect to be very good at it.

Be sure to do each drawing numerous times, you will see your improvement and get motivated for other drawings.

I recommend this book to everyone; even the most novice of artists can enjoy it.

In My Humble Opinion

The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation Review

I first saw Disney’s Pinnochio as a six year old, and it changed my life. It lead to a life-long love of art, animation, ecology, whales, and the sea.
As I grew older I was to learn that Pinnochio, along with Bambi, is regarded as among the very best, if not THE best of Disney animation. I have both these films on DVD, and any law abiding animation fan shouldn’t be without them.
Nor should any animation nut be without this book. This is a most comprehensive, colourfully illustrated document of the why’s and wherefore’s of Disney animation.
While it goes into considerable detail, it is strictly speaking not a manual as such.
It is more designed as an insight into the mysteries of animation for the lay person, with more than enough to inspire and inform any potential animator. It covers the various aspects of the animation process, and the history of Disney animation. It is accompanied by ooddles, and oodles of full page colour photos, reproductions of animation sequences of famous Disney characters, diagrams, sections on each of the main Disney animators, and hilarious caricatures that animators did of each other.
This book is simply a “must have” for any Disney animation fan, or any animation fan period.
I am thrilled to have this book. It arrived in record time too, and well packaged.
Do yourself a favour, and get this. You’e GOT TO HAVE IT!

You won’t be disappointed.

The Big Book of Design Ideas (Big Book (Collins Design)) Review

The Big Book of Design Ideas is eye candy for the Graphic Designer. This oversized book is packed to the gills with nearly 400 pages of examples of graphic design from around the world and is the perfect book for solo-brainstorming. There is no text in the book at all, other than in the designs themselves and in a short caption under each design that details the designer/design team. The book is organized into 24 sections, each one containing designs from a particular type of print; books, catalogs, menus, Music CDs, letterhead sets and more. Every design is in full color. The reader can easily find a section dealing with what he/she is working on and get inspiration for their design or they can just simply flip through the pages for the shear enjoyment of it. One should not expect to learn graphic design from this book, but then that is not really the purpose of the book to begin with. Once one has a good foundation in the basics of graphic design, this book becomes more valuable as an inspirational tool. The book is a good addition to the library of any one in graphic design.

The Big Book of Design Ideas (Big Book (Collins Design)) Overview

This is a book that many have described as a must have for every designer’s bookshelf. Finally available in paperback, this invaluable compendium offers more than 900 examples of graphic design projects of all kinds — promotional materials, letterheads, editorial layouts, exhibits, packaging, posters, annual reports, T-shirts and more — culled from the work of leading professionals in every area of the graphic design field.
