My New York: New Anniversary Edition Review

By PHIL

I’m happy I read this book because there are many cool things in this book. It explains all the cool things that you can do in New York City. It has the whispering room in Grand Central Station. You whisper into one corner and someone whispers at the other and you can hear each other.
And lots of things like that. It is mostly for kids 7-11 years old but adult tourists will like it to.

…Story Board…

It’s about a girl that made an agreement with her mom to go on trips every weekend. The girl’s name is Becky. She and her mom go to places that are fun in New York.

On one trip they go to Radio City Music Hall to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Her friend Martin comes with her. In the book, she describes how the orchestra rises out of the floor in the beginning and then goes back in. I went to this show with my parents and this really does happen!

They also go to the New York Public Library, Central Park Zoo, the Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty, Times Square and other cool places.

I recommend this book to any tourist trying to find fun stuff to do when visiting New York City.

This Book Is So Darn Cool!!!

Be aware of Scientology promotion in this book – char – Los Angeles, CA
I purchased this book in NYC a week ago and just tossed it in the trash; wish I had viewed more carefully before purchasing. Should have known when I saw “Celebrity Centre” noted on the lovely map on the inside cover. My suspicions were confirmed with the depiction of John Travolta & family on the following page, billboards for “Dianetics” in the New Years’ Eve/Times Square scene, etc. No thanks.

Wonderful Pictures! – Carolyn K. Perry – Memphis, TN
The idea of the story is very cute. A letter is written to a friend that will be coming to NYC. The pictures, though, are wonderful. The are very colorful and take you all over the city. Love this book!

Overseas cousins LOVE it! – Julia Collins – usa
Bought this for my little cousins overseas to help them understand where we live. Apperently their mother likes it more than them! Now they know where I’m talking about when i say we went to Central park today or the zoo. i’ll be buying more for my friends children as gifts. Great book.

Helen Cordero And The Storytellers Of The Cochiti Pueblo (A Closer Look Activity Book) Review

This is an excellent book. I am an art teacher who uses this book to help children appreciate other cultures and their traditions. I use the book for inspiring children when we do a clay project. I do not have the children copy the clay figures, but come up with ideas of their own. The media specialist at my school also uses it to encourage children to create their own stories.

Check Out The Book of Joe: The Art of Joe Coleman for $29.50

The Book of Joe: The Art of Joe Coleman Review

A number of fine books on Joe Coleman’s work exist, but none offer the scope, detail and production quality of “The Book of Joe.” Joe’s work has long merited a volume that not only reproduces nearly every painting he’s produced, but offers readers highly-magnified details of the paintings. Even for those lucky enough to view his work firsthand (you pretty much have to know someone – the work is rarely exhibited publicly, and still more rarely can you see more than one painting at a time), these details elude the naked eye.

In addition to previously unpublished work, The Book of Joe is also a tour through the painter’s life, loves, friends, performances and, of course, the infamous Odditorium.

This is an important book about an important painter. And it’s as deep into Joe Coleman’s mind as anyone’s likely to get.

Check Out The Fish House Book: Life on Ice in the Northland for $17.05

The Fish House Book: Life on Ice in the Northland Review

Compiled with occasional captions by portrait and commercial photographer Kathryn Nordstrom, “The Fish House Book: Life On The Ice In The Northland” provides a visually impressive photographic survey of fish houses and the ice fishing culture that created them. Nordstrom photographically documents the people, the ice fishing culture, and the fish houses (interior and exterior) with more than two hundred color images. From the Aitkin Fish House Parade, to the Brainered Extravaganza, to the Walker Eelpout Festival, to camping overnight on Lake of the Woods, to a wedding, “The Fish House Book” is a fascinating and informative glimpse into a genuine upper midwest American subculture. Enhanced with an essay by Arnold Alanen (Professor of Landscape Architecture, University of Wisconsin-Madison), “The Fish House Book” is very highly recommended for academic and community library collections, and for non-specialist general readers with an interest in ice fishing houses and the culture that supports them.

Excellent gift choice for the avid ice fisherman! – K. Caul – Beaver Dam, WI
I got this product for my husband, who spends his winter in an ice shack, fishing sun up to sun down! He loved the photographs of the different ice shacks and the information about different ice fishing events. Also a good coffee table book- all of his friends have spent a lot of time looking at the crafty ice shacks. A good buy!

Writing and Illustrating Children’s Books for Publication: Two Perspectives Review

This book is both an excellent reference book for the want to be child book author as well as a beautiful book to own. The print and paper quality are excellent, the cover art and interior illustrations are captivating. There are excercises, reading lists and case histories to aid an aspiring writer or illustrator.

This book contains a wealth of information and is also well organized and an overall interesting read. Prior to publication I purchased this title, several years and now three children’s books later, I still turn to this title as a reference book. Having purchased many books on this subject, this IS the BEST single source I have found. The information is great for the writer as well as the illustrator.

A bit higher in price than some but very well worth it. If you could only buy one book on this subject, I would urge you to make this the ONE!

Good book, but a little outdated – Lisa Jackson – Washington Terrace, Utah, USA
This is a good book about writing childrens’ books, but with outdated examples and with bad and very outdated illustration examples. I had to laugh when the author mentioned the popular childrens’ books of the day for preteens being the “Goosebumps” series and the “Sweet Valley High” series. Ha ha! Funny!

Writing and Illustrating Children’s Books for Publication – L. Francke – Elfland USA
…I rated this book a “3″ because the information contained for illustrators was minimal & the art work was old and dated. This book was directed to the prospective writer of children’s books and illustration was a by-line…. It was excellent for the “writer to be” in giving helpful guidelines: how to get started, submission of manuscripts, and the subject matter which would attract publishers.

I wouldn’t recommend this book for illustrators – –
What little information there was about illustrating books was too basic and there was no index. Also, it included many illustrations from old children’s books without identifying the illustrator or the book they were from. More than likely the copyright had expired on these images yet this practice irked me for two reasons-first, this shows a lack of respect, for not only those neglected illustrators but for all illustrators, and second, an aspiring illustrator may have been moved to investigate and study an illustrator that they liked had the name been listed. Bad form for a book whose intent is to teach.

If you really want to learn about illustrating picturebooks, check out Writing With Pictures by Uri Schulevitz.

Two Perspectives, and then Mine – Agy Wilson – Portland, ME United States
My monetary resources are limited so finding informative resource material is a must for me. This Book admirably fills the bill. With its exercises and readability, it engages the reader from the first. Info on not only rendering, it gives a lot of detail on submitting. Colorful and straightforward text, a great reading list, and suggested assignments all focus the reader to the goal of being and illustrator. Written from both sides of the fence, artist and editor, it gives the reader a realistic view of what to expect from the field and why. I think this is a must have for anyone in the business or interested in the business.

The Little Book of Layouts: Good Designs and Why They Work Review

This book has a large collection of layouts. Useful for a reference and to see what other people are doing. I wouldn’t call a lot of the layouts ‘outstanding’, and the book is A5 in size, so a lot of the designs span the spread which makes them difficult to view. Despite that, it still is a nice little reference book.

nice little book – miss psychosis –
The thing that I liked about this book was that instead of merely serving up a collection of what the author deems “good design” (don’t get me wrong, I own lots of “inspiration” books), there were comments provided for why the design worked.

kind of ok; not very technical – alice –
i’m not trained in graphic design, but the brief tips on each page seemed simplistic to me. example: “the same neutral colors are used throughout this brochure.” um, ok… so? i guess the book is a decent collection of photos of layouts that the author liked, but it did not give me a systematic way of thinking about design.

Just adding it to the collection – Christina Paul – Anamosa, IA USA
I love Dover’s CD ROM & Book series. In fact, I would classify myself as a junkie. I have every Egyptian-related release that Dover has ever published, and while the illustrations in the book are very striking and crisp, if you look at the TIF’s on the enclosed CD ROM, they are extremely amateurish and sloppy. If you are thinking about using them for any sort of web or book project, then without a doubt you will be spending a great deal of time doing cleanup and colour re-adjustment in Photoshop, Paintshop Pro or another graphics editor. The colours of items, glyphs and fleshtones are not at all consistent to Ancient Egyptian artistic canon and grammar. Also, there is an almost excessive use of the colour orange within the geometric patterns as well. One gets the feeling you have seen the same pattern over and over again with very few variations on a theme.
