Edward Gorey: The New Poster Book Review

I can recall the first Gorey poster book perfectly as I flip through The New Poster Book [Pomegranate, San Francisco 2009]. What a treat! Once again I find something pleasantly unexpected. While the original Gorey Posters (Abrams, 1979) sports a festive cover, once inside, it was strictly a black and white affair, and mostly reprints from Gorey’s early books. The New Poster Book likewise greets in vivid technicolor-Gorey, but keeps the chroma coming – eighteen out of the thirty ‘posters’ in all. The antique sepia tone palette and demonstrative details in ‘Frawgge Mfrg Co’ beckons like an old family album, ‘The Galoshes of Remorse’ wonderfully moody. ‘Les Insectes Cyclistes’ from The Broken Spoke mischievous and otherworldly.

Interestingly, not all of these eighteen were colored by Gorey’s hand. Some are posthumously ‘decorated’, possibly spurring future debate over such practices. But I have to admit I enjoyed the ‘new rendition’ of The Dong with the Luminous Nose illustration, feeling that it captured Gorey’s aesthetic amazingly well. Otherwise, it’s fairly easy to detect Gorey’s own watercolor brush work, and the updated works did not prove distracting in the end. They co-exist.

Like its forerunner Gorey Posters, this book is designed to be disassembled, mounted, and framed. All you need is the nerve. If you take the plunge, use a 16 x 12 inch frame, or better yet a 20 x 16 with mat. Would I have the heart to take a knife to a new copy? Probably not … unless someone asked me to deck their halls in Gorey. I recommend The New Poster Book highly, for it offers something new. As we approach the 10th anniversary of Gorey’s passing, we can find new ways to enjoy Gorey’s boundless and playful imagination. Engaging this large, 15-inch tall folio magnifies the joy of Gorey’s compositions, and in doing so, memories of his work become more complete, enhanced with detail.

Edward Gorey: The New Poster Book Overview

The Doubtful Guest, Amy and Basil Gashlycrumb, Dracula and Lucy, Jumblies, the Great Veiled Bear–this curious cast of characters joins a slew of other peculiar people and beasts in this big beauty of a book. Thirty large-format reproductions display Edward Gorey’s signature crosshatched drawings, elegant watercolors, and endless wit–all perfect for framing, or to treasure as a collection.

This is a brand new publication, not a remake of Gorey Posters (Abrams, 1979), now long out of print. With eighteen images in full color, Edward Gorey: The New Poster Book presents a refreshing and engaging survey of the genius of this beloved artist.

The Pastel Book Review

You’ll love this book if you want to know just about everything there is to know about all the types & brands of pastels available to you and if you would like to know what artists are using out there and what can be achieved with all these products. It’s all here for you to explore for yourself through Mr. Creevy’s thorough “walk-through” of materials, supports & tools. The excitement comes from his step by step demonstrations using many products, such as soft pastels, hard pastels, and oil pastels of many types, and the effects achieved with mixed media. If this book doesn’t get you motivated, nothing will! I carried this book around with me for weeks and I am still referring to it. I enjoyed Mr. Creevy’s “out of the box” techniques and subject matter. His knowledge & talent are obvious and we are fortunate that he chose to share with us.

The Pastel Book Overview

Absolutely the most thorough guide to pastel materials and techniques ever assembled in a single volume, this is the book for anyone working with pastels, from beginners to experienced artists looking to develop more professional skills. 450 color illustrations.

Skies and the Artist: How to Draw Clouds and Sunsets (Dover Books on Art Instruction) Review

Eric Sloane, homespun writer and artist, offers gentle advice on creating realistic clouds in graphite or pastel.

He covers cloud “geography,” realistic shading and shaping, and various types of realistic clouds. Sloane’s knowledge of weather and meteorology gives him extra insight into why clouds form the way they do, and when to use certain types.

The instructions are largely designed for readers with some previous drawing experience (it doesn’t teach the basics of drawing).

I also find that the instructions can be logically adapted to pen & ink, pastel, and even paint.

Recommended for any art instruction library.

Skies and the Artist: How to Draw Clouds and Sunsets (Dover Books on Art Instruction) Overview

One of the first books of its kind, Sloane’s “talk on clouds” does much more than teach you how to draw. Before the sketching even begins, he describes different types of “cloudscapes” and offers homespun techniques that help add texture and realism to cloud illustrations. Includes 110 black-and-white illustrations.

Monologues for Teens and Twenties Overview

These monologues are for younger actors, in their teens or early-mid twenties. Originally part of Jim Chevallier’s larger work “The Monologue Bin”, they are now available here in a separate collection.

Monologues from this original collection have been anthologized in Gerard Lee Ratliff’s “Millenium Monologues”, and elsewhere.

The voices here mock, mollify, tease, plead, observe, insist, discover, mourn, rage, boast, rejoice, complain… The speakers are in high school, at work, at home, in clubs; with family, with friends, with strangers; alone. They want your attention. They want to exist. They want to be heard.

The only thing missing to give them life is… you.

Christmasland Review

Ralph Del Pozzo and David High take readers back to Christmas past in their book, CHRISTMASLAND. The book contains a charming display of vintage Christmas figurine decorations that probably date back to the 1940s to 1960s as well as commentary from the authors. Del Pozzo and High share little tidbits of popular Christmas history that reference origins of the most familiar figures and traditions that occur during holiday — Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, Frosty the snowman, the artificial Christmas tree, candy canes, and many others.

Del Pozzo and High show their creative expertise in the fields of photography and design to conjure up the joys of Christmas past. With creativity, they recreate and bring to life a miniature winter wonderland, which magically displays ornamental objects that usually were not meant to be set up in a play-like fashion, but may have been displayed in a shadow box or on the kitchen table — a snowman salt ‘n’ pepper shaker and collectible reindeers that were originally attached to a cardboard promotional recording disc of the Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer song. The figurines may have also fit perfectly with a train set village. And the most interesting aspect about the book is that most of the items exhibited in the book come from Del Pozzo’s and High’s personal collections, which they have accumulated throughout the years from childhood to the present.

CHRISTMASLAND will enchant the child in everyone. There’s a chunk full of elves, angels, nativity figures and church steeples, and Old Saint Nick in different forms for all to enjoy. So, for those who remember the old five and dime stores, most of the items displayed in the book will and bring back memories of Christmas past.

Christmasland Overview

Feel the warmth and delight of Christmas past in this lushly illustrated book capturing the nostalgia, charm, and sparkling beauty of vintage holiday decorations.

Ralph and David focus their wit and camera lens on the charming vintage decorations that have made Christmas so memorable over the years. This enchanting collection captures the wonder and beauty and will rekindle the child–like wonder that Christmas has inspired over the years.

Things that will be included:

•Celluloid light–up Santa’s, snowmen, music–box churches, angel tree–toppers (with foil wings and glowing halos!).

•Five–and–dime nativity sets (from tiny plastic ones to the “fancier” models!).

•Odd ceramic figurines. These used to be found lurking around in homemade snowdrifts atop TV sets and on martini carts all across the country.

•Putz houses the little glittery paper villages that sprung up from the 30’s to the 60’s

•Pinecone people elves, pixies, angels, snowmen, Santa’s.

The Penguin Book of Historic Speeches Review

Aren’t the speeches in and of themselves, enough to inspire? Why would we need someone else’s exhortation about the speeches themselves. They are their own best witnesses of the greatness of each of them. Whether we have a great commentary on them or a horrible one, or none at all, makes no difference to me personally. If I watch a film of a presidential speech, I usually do not stay tuned to have a news commentator tell me what I just heard :) So, these speeches are great in and of themselves, and need no commentary at all, whether good, bad or indifferent.
Do we watch a baseball game in its entirety and then immediately switch to a sports channel to find out from THEM how the game went???? We just saw the game!

The Penguin Book of Historic Speeches Overview

Great leaders of history have sought to take their followers to the promised land through the uplifting power of speech. Editor Brian MacArthur surveys the greatest oratory past and present. From Moses to Abraham Lincoln, he shows that great speeches can be placed alongside the work of artists, poets, and priests and read with the same pleasure and intellectual enlightenment.

Surface Design for Ceramics (A Lark Ceramics Book) Review

If you’re looking for techniques to try as you work in clay, the recently published Surface Design for Ceramics may be just your cup of tea.

No how-to book showing how to execute someone else’s ideas, New Hampshire Institute of Art Ceramics chair Maureen Millls’ book exxposes the reader, with helpful detail, to a wide range of decorative processes. Close-up photographs show her hands at work demonstrating at every stage of making, from freshly-thrown clay, through biscuit to post-firing. Her finished pieces are fine illustrations of process. The layout of pages is balance and attractive. While the tools employed are simple, possibilities for their use are many, as are the examples of pots and details of pots showing how the effects are achieved. I found myself drawn in, wanting to know which tools and techniques were used, and in what sequence. There is plenty of explanation.

Mills’ own pieces are augmented by photos of other artists’ work, both contemporary and from historic periods. Inclusion of pieces by potters in New England, both well and lesser-known, is refreshing, as it reveals her interest in and personal connection to other people’s work and style. It’s a delight to see so many New Hampshire potters represented!

After the (too short!) chapter on design, dividing the book into clay stages is useful, as it avoids the confusion of figuring out at what stage which technique is appropriate. You can jump right in, and imagination is stimulated, not to copy, but to move through and past, to one’s own expression. Options for firing and post-firing finishing are thought-provoking, as one sees the results and can identify the methods of firing. Truly, we are being taught to make our own choices, and the possibilities are endless.

Maureen Mills’ considerable experience as a teacher informs the book. She and her husband, Steve Zoldak, are remarkable as educators. Helpful hints abound, clear and concise, never with the pedantic verbosity that has often made me turn the page to escape an author’s self-centered intrusion on process.

There is something in this book for most potters, and discreet but crucial suggestions are what intrigue me the most, such as: “It’s best to take time to visualize the finished piece before you get started.”

Surface Design for Ceramics (A Lark Ceramics Book) Overview

For ceramists of any level, surface design is an essential skill for creating beautiful work. And this comprehensive and invaluable studio reference captures all the popular techniques available for embellishing clay. A wealth of practical information and detailed images lead you through every phase of the process—from the wet and leather-hard stages (faceting, carving, burnishing) through bisque ware (terra sigillata and slip work), to firing (glazing methods) and post-firing (decals, lusters, and raku). Because the procedures shown all require the same basic skill level, readers can dip in at any point. Time-tested recipes are offered in abundance, photos of fired demonstration pieces show the final effect, and top-quality contemporary gallery pictures display the fabulous results.  Sidebars throughout offer options for further exploration.
