The American House Styles of Architecture Coloring Book Review
I got my first dover coloring book about 30 years ago and have been hooked. I now have a collection of about 20. They are kind of hard to find in retail and when you do the selection is poor.
I find coloring to be very relaxing when you are stressed. I also cannot just watch tv I like to be doing crochet or cross stitching, coloring.
These books are very well done as far as the drawings are concerned. They can be very intricate. Some are made more for children but many would be hard for a child under say 10yrs old to do and feel good about.
They are best done with colored pencils as you can get really good at shading and make them really pretty.
I highly recommend this and many others. I do own this specific book.

Read Me: A Century of Classic American Book Advertisements Review
I really enjoyed reading Dwight Garner’s book. The ads represent how readers first heard of many of these books, and the way these classic books were “sold” to the public. It’s fascinating social history – and quite a joy to browse. I highly recommend this. You may quote me: “I couldn’t put it down!”
Read Me: A Century of Classic American Book Advertisements Overview
This witty and heavily illustrated volume features more than 300 vintage book advertisements?startling and strange, beautiful and funny?that together reveal a kind of secret history of American literature over the last century.
New York Times book critic Dwight Garner brings together original ads for some of the most acclaimed and best-selling books of the twentieth century, including The Great Gatsby, Ulysses, On the Road, Invisible Man, Lolita, Silent Spring, The Joy of Sex, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ‘72, White Noise, and dozens of other classics. These ads show us famous books when they were simply new volumes jostling for attention on bookstore shelves, not yet icons of our literary culture. And the ads capture many beloved authors?Toni Morrison, Cormac McCarthy, Susan Sontag, and Kurt Vonnegut among a great many others?at moments before their careers were assured, before their personas had hardened into those of “famous writers.”
In his introduction, Garner explains the changing styles of book advertising; explores the cross-pollination between literature and the world of advertising, in which many writers?including Don DeLillo, Salman Rushdie, and James Patterson?worked before publishing their first books; and makes a convincing case that these vintage ads are important and lasting literary documents.
Read Me is a fascinating and unusual romp through literary history, and an ideal gift for any reader.

On Alexander Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War (Defining Moments in American Photography) Overview
Soon after Alexander Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Bookwas published, in 1866, it became the Civil War’s best-known visual record and helped define how viewers, then and in subsequent generations, would come to know the war. Gardner’s classic also became foundational in the history of American photography, combining, for the first time, words and images in a sophisticated and moving account. This book, written by the art historian Anthony W. Lee and the literary scholar Elizabeth Young, interprets the story of the war as told by Gardner, unraveling his careful choice of words and images and the complicated play between them, and understanding them against the backdrop of the literary and photographic cultures of the American antebellum and Reconstruction eras. This book presents a unique study of a pivotal American historical document, approaching it from the perspective of visual studies as well as American literature and history.

The Book of Elders: The Life Stories of Great American Indians Review
Do not miss this book if you are interested in wisdom that one seldom, gets in any world that is not Indigenous. Indigenous wisdom gives us lessons for life lived from the heart and lived in tune with our Mother Earth, particularly from elders; be they natives of Turtle Island (North America), Australia, New Zealand, South America or the African continent.
I loved this book and I love the wisdom imparted by the authors of each story. It is good to learn and it is best to learn from those who have lived long lives and learned their wisdom, not only from their own lives but also from the teachings of their ancestors.

Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Review
I got this book through inter-library loan on the advice of an online silver seller and hobbyist? expert? We are restoring an 1800s farmhouse in New York state, and have found various bits of silver and pottery and other things. Everything is quite worn and dirty from being underground for decades. I did a number of online searches but it was this book which enabled me to identify, just in the course of one afternoon, two pieces of cutlery — one old silver, one less old silverplate, and be fairly secure in the ID because this book tells a bit about some of the marks, such as their locale.
No resource is infinite. This book shows many, many marks, and the text tells of the history and relationships among many of the manufacturers. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone else doing research. Don’t forget your loupe or other strong magnifier!
Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Overview
With more than 2300 marks illustrated and brief histories and cross-references of more than 1600 manufacturers, this is the most comprehensive reference source on the subject. To compile the information presented here, the authors devoted much time researching numerous sources. These include various editions of Trademarks of the Jewelry & Kindred Trades, U.S. Patent Office records, silver and jewelry catalogs of manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, records of companies still in business, and pieces examined in antiques shops all over the country. This fifth edition includes new trademarks, additional companies, and brings to date the many changes in company ownership during the last decade.

The Back Stage Book of New American Short Plays 2005: 20 Plays, 20 New Voices Review

Craig Lucas has done an excellent job finding 20 unique short plays. The pieces are mostly naturalistic, but there is a solid variety of distinctive voices – good for a read, good for acting class, good for production. Particular standouts were The Mulligan, by Scott Organ, Dissatisfaction #4, by Jeff Tabnick and Sad Song, by Anna Ziegler. These three short plays were both spare and profound, and continued to resonate with me, long after I was done reading. Also of note are China, by Scott Organ and Davy and Stu, by Anton Dudley.
