The Ultimate Guitar Book Review

Tony Bacon’s book “The Ultimate Guitar Book” goes into detail about acoustic, solidbody and bass guitars and is full of great pictures of all types. The book starts out with a hitory of the guitar from the 16th and 17th centuries and how it developed to it’s current form.

The acoustic guitar section begins with the anatomy of the acoustic guitar and some basic terminology. The chapter progresses through classical guitar builders Antonio De Torres and discusses the styles of classical and flamenco guitar. The Martin guitar company’s guitars are discussed next with a discussion of the various body sizes, inlays and production dates. The chapter continues with D’Angelico, D’Aquisto, Epiphone, Gibson’s archtops and flattops and Ovation guitars. The chapter finishes up with resonators and lap and pedal steels.

The electric section starts with the earlist pioneers of amplified guitars like the Rickenbacker “Frying Pan” and the Les Paul “Log”. The Fender Telecaster, Stratocaster and various Fenders are covered along with Gibsons Les Pauls, Flying V’s, Rickenbackers and various American and European guitars.

This book is a great starting point for reference and research but is only a starting point. There are many other books devoted to single models such as the Les Paul and Stratocaaster that one book could not possibly cover everything. Well worth the price espcially for all of the wonderful pictures.

The Ultimate Guitar Book Overview

The Ultimate Guitar Book is a comprehensive, lavishly illustrated guide to guitars, from early acoustics to the latest electrics. No book has ever brought together so many guitars in such keen detail and rich portrayal, featuring specially commissioned photographs of over 450 famous, rare and vintage guitars. It is packed with construction and design information which brings each instrument to life. In addition, it contains profiles of great guitar designers and their pioneering innovative workshops. The Ultimate Guitar Book is quite simply the most beautiful book on the guitar ever produced: its opulent illustration is complemented by extensive factual narrative. The book is certain to become a definitive reference work on the subject, and makes immensely pleasurable browsing for guitar players and collectors alike, from beginner to professional. 9 inch. x 11 inch..

The Ultimate Guitar Book Specifications

The guitar is the most popular and versatile of all musical instruments, lending its humble presence to musical forms and genres from rock, country, and bluegrass to classical, jazz, and blues. In The Ultimate Guitar Book, the guitars on display show an almost infinite range of variations and refinements on one basic theme “a box with a neck,” as the editors put it in the introduction to the acoustic guitar. From 17th century Stradivari to the latest guitar-synthesizer hybrids, it’s all here: instruments famous and rare, antique and novel, including guitars owned or used by notable musical figures from Les Paul to Paul McCartney. The text includes helpful notes on the instruments’ construction, as well as information about legendary designers like Martin, Gibson, and Fender. Whether you are a guitarist, collector, or simply an admirer of exquisite musical craftsmanship, this lovely book is a testament to human ingenuity in search of the perfect sound.

The Photoshop Elements 7 Book for Digital Photographers Review

As a beginner digital photographer and new to the world of photo software, this book is perfect. It is easy to read and understand, humorous, gives step-by-step solutions to common problems and, most importantly, it is FUN.

It is not an exhaustive desk-top reference for PS Elements, and I’m sure it is not intended to be. As a beginner, the problem I have with photo software is understanding what the applications might be for the myriad features. This book takes a look at common applications and, using a step-by-step approach, walks the reader through frequently used features for organizing and editing photos. It gets you started…it’s a terrific learning tool!

It also includes ideas for projects to show your work, such as client presentations, multi-photo layouts, postcards and book pages, to name a few.

Love it, love it, love it!

The Photoshop Elements 7 Book for Digital Photographers Overview

This book breaks new ground by doing something for digital photographers that’s never been done before—it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure things out on your own. Instead, it does something that virtually no other Elements book has ever done—it tells you flat-out which settings to use, when to use them, and why. If you’re looking for one of those “tell-me-everything-about-the-Unsharp-Maskfilter” books, this isn’t it. You can grab any other Elements book on the shelf, because they all do that. Instead, this book gives you the inside tips and tricks of the trade for organizing, correcting, editing, sharpening, retouching, and presenting your photos like a pro. You’ll be absolutely amazed at how easy and effective these techniques are—once you know the secrets.

Each year we train thousands of digital photographers and, almost without exception, they have the same questions and face the same problem—that’s exactly what we cover in this book. You’ll learn:

• The real secrets of how the pros retouch portraits
• How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat (you’ll be amazed at how they do it!)
• How to use Camera Raw for processing not only RAW photos, but JPEGs and TIFFs, too! (And you’ll learn why so many pros like it best—because it’s faster and easier)
• The sharpening techniques the pros really use (there’s an entire chapter just on this!)
• How to deal with common digital camera image problems, including removing noise and avoiding halos
• The most requested photographic special effects, and much more!

THE BOOK’S SECRET WEAPON
Although Elements 7 offers some digital photography features that Photoshop CS4 doesn’t offer, there are plenty of features that Photoshop CS4 has that Elements 7 still doesn’t have (things like layer masking, Channel Mixer, etc.). But in this book, you’ll learn some slick workarounds, cheats, and some fairly ingenious ways to replicate many of those Photoshop features from right within Elements. Plus, since this book is designed for photographers, it doesn’t waste your time talking about how to frame a shot, setting your exposure, etc., and there’s no talk about which camera or printer to buy. It’s all Elements, step-by-step, cover-to-cover, in the only book of its kind, and you’re gonna love it!

The Tattoo History Source Book Review

Were you a fan of tattoing who had been stranded on that proverbial desert isle and allowed only half dozen favorite musical discs and but one or two books, it’s a good bet that you would want Steve Gilbert’s “Tattoo History: A Source Book” to keep you company.

A somewhat uneven quality of writing and of academic documentation mark this book. Even so, “Tattoo History: A Source Book” is an impressive work that reflects serious research, and it is a tour de force in comfortably handling material that ranges widely over time and space. On a subject that is so often dominated by photographs and essays that emphasize above all Japanese-style tattooing, it is a delight to learn as well of the long tradition of tattooing in the Pacific Isles, of the role tattoos played in the ancient Middle East, and of early 20th-century tattooing in the West. Gilbert’s extensive use of source material–efectively translated from many languages–lends the book its gravitas and contributes significantly to his success in instilling in the reader an increased sense of respect for the tattoo arts.

Finally I should note that even if this book did not open new vistas for the reader, the essays which bookend “Tattoo History” would alone be worth the price of admission. Gilbert’s opener, “Confessions of a Tattoo Addict,” although but two pages in length, is an evocative essay that relates a fascination with tattoos to his coming of age in the 1940s. Meanwhile, the lengthier closing essay by Don Ed Hardy documents the resurgence of tattooing over the past several decades, the cultural cross-fertilization that has occurred, and the slow but growing acceptance of tattooing as a legitimate art form by the more conventional arts world.

The Tattoo History Source Book Overview

The Tattoo History Source Book is an exhaustingly thorough, lavishly illustrated collection of historical records of tattooing throughout the world, from ancient times to the present. Collected together in one place, for the first time, are texts by explorers, journalists, physicians, psychiatrists, anthropologists, scholars, novelists, criminologists, and tattoo artists. A brief essay by Gilbert sets each chapter in an historical context. Topics covered include the first written records of tattooing by Greek and Roman authors; the dispersal of tattoo designs and techniques throughout Polynesia; the discovery of Polynesian tattooing by European explorers; Japanese tattooing; the first 19th-century European and American tattoo artists; tattooed British royalty; the invention of the tattooing machine; and tattooing in the circus. The anthology concludes with essays by four prominent contemporary tattoo artists: Tricia Allen, Chuck Eldridge, Lyle Tuttle, and Don Ed Hardy. The references at the end of each section will provide an introduction to the extensive literature that has been inspired by the ancient-but-neglected art of tattooing. Because of its broad historical context, The Tattoo History Source Book will be of interest to the general reader as well as art historians, tattoo fans, neurasthenics, hebephrenics, and cyclothemics.

The Log Home Plan Book: Favorite Plans, Decor and Advice Review

This was the first log home book my wife and I purchased after making the decision to not settle for any old house on the market and to build our dream home. It was a great way to get the ideas flowing. I appreciate the layout of the book: lots of exterior and interior photos, floor plans to put the photos into perspective, text descriptions of the houses, and great side bars on everything from windows to roofs to heating. The photos and descriptions are inspiring while the floor plans and side bars are practical. Buy this book early in the process and continue to refer to it as your design comes together.

Taylor Swift Review

This is a great book for fans of Taylor Swift. It has a lot of color pictures, and not that wordy, so can be read in one sitting. Learn about her starting out in show business, her growing up and her experiences that influence her music. Also about her likes and dislikes, the standard fare which interests her young fans. What I like the best is the pictures, many full-page-sized, reminds you more of a tabloid-like magazine than a book.

Taylor Swift Overview

Taylor Swift Love Story is more than a biography; it s all the information you ever wanted to know about this music sensation. Did you ever wonder what Taylor s former music teachers think of her success? Or which boys inspired her hit songs? Are you curious what s on Taylors iPod? Or how she celebrates the holidays? This detailed book answers all of these questions and more, from her childhood in Pennsylvania to her Fearless tour, and everything in between! Taylor Swift: Love Story is a must have for all Taylor Swift Fans.

Alfred’s Teach Yourself to Play Piano (Book & DVD) (Teach Yourself Series) Review

I purchased this kit to help teach us how to play the piano. We just purchased a Casio Privia PX-330 keyboard and wanted to start lessons as soon as possible. I work part time with the Air National Guard and I am a full time student. I don’t really have time for lessons so I wanted something I can do myself. This kit is amazing and really does help. I have never played any instrument before and I can’t read music. This book teaches you both. Learning to play the piano is a very daunting task but it is much easier with this book. My wife and oldest son are still going to take lessons because they have the time, but I am very satisfied with learning from this book. It does a GREAT job and I would recommend it to everyone trying to learn the piano!!! Would buy again for sure!

Book of Hours: Illuminations by Simon Marmion Review

I purchased this as a gift from my son’s “Wish List”. He was very happy to receive it and said it was what he had anticipated. I was happy for the prompt shipping, esp. before Christmas. Thanks.

Book of Hours: Illuminations by Simon Marmion Overview

Books of Hours are among the most striking examples of medieval illuminated manuscripts. Commissioned by wealthy men and women for their private religious devotions, these beautifully decorated books contain prayers for the eight canonical hours of the day.
This book reproduces seventeen jewel-like miniature paintings by Simon Marmion from one of the finest Books of Hours in the Huntington Library’s collections. Marmion, one of the most accomplished illuminators of the fifteenth century, produced this example sometime between 1450 and 1475. The French manuscript Book of Hours displays a number of scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The book’s introduction discusses the history and meaning of Books of Hours, both as books of devotion and as works of art.
