Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Late 1950s (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Overview

Meet the book that defined fashion for generations of Americans in the twentieth century-the Sears Catalog. European couture designs were beautiful in fashion magazines but the average person with an average income shopped for clothing in department stores. The Sears Catalog brought household goods and fashionable clothing to everyone, whether they had access to a department store or not. Pictured here is clothing for men, women, and children taken from actual Sears Catalogs from the late 1950s, along with descriptions and original prices. Current values for some items are included as a reference guide for collectors of 1950s vintage clothing. Who can forget slim sheaths and whirly skirts, rolled-up dungarees and pedal pushers, bouffant slips and taffeta prom gowns, fraternity prep jackets and children’s western wear? With more than 400 color photographs, this book offers a nostalgic look into fashionable clothing of an era which defined an entire generation.

Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Late 1950s (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Review

Joy Shih and Schiffer Publications have done it again. Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Late 1950’s is an excellent Primary resource for Costume and Fashion Designers. I find that the layout and the organization of this book much better than Schiffer’s “early 1950’s”. Unfortunately it only focuses on Sears Catolgues’ perspective of this era, which is only middle America, blue collar, suburbia. I give this book for stars for its’ use of primary resource, clear division of clothing types, reproduction of true fifties color, and actual cost of garments today and yesterday

Leica Collectors Guide: 2nd Edition (Hove Collectors Books) Overview

Thoroughly revised, brought up to date, and completely reset with some 60% more pages. The layout has been redesigned to make this edition much easier to use as a work of reference. All the numerous new products introduced since the first edition are included. Two new chapters have been added, one on Leica Digital Cameras and one on Leicina Cine Cameras, and a new section on leather cases. Additional information, corrections and comments from readers all over the world have been incorporated.

Leica Collectors Guide: 2nd Edition (Hove Collectors Books) Review

For First Edition: This book has many construction dates, history, and pictures of Leica lenses. Includes reasonably big pictures of many lenses to give you the sense of physical character of the lenses. Seems to cover all old lenses and new up to 1994. Only seems to have information on 35mm ASPH and not other Asph lenses or on the newer lenses. For the used buyer you should get the Leica Pocket Book by Erwin Puts with this or before this book. Sartorius book “Identifying Leica Lenses” is also helpful for used buyer. Also has a list of serial numbers up to 1988. Includes info on old leica copy equipment and many other accessories with pictures of much but not all items. It has Visoflex information. Includes R & L body information and pictures. Production numbers given when available. Lacks opinion comments which can be a blessing or frustrating depending on what you want. I wanted opinion or reputation of lenses which this does not attempt to cover so I give it a 4. Others wanting a construction facts book may rate it a 5.

Fashionable Clothing: From the Sears Catalogs – Mid 1960s (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Review

Sure, “Radical Rags” is an amazing book, but very few could actually afford, or indeed have the guts, to wear many of the designs it features. This book shows how the look of the ’60s trickled down to the middle American masses. Don’t be put off by the Sears name–many of the outfits here are divine, and some are downright outlandish. Even the prim suits look fresh and cute. Unlike some other books on vintage clothing from this publisher, this one features actual source photos from the period, so the hair-dos, make-up, accessories and overall look are accurate. The companion volumes on the late ’60s and 1950s are equally fab.

Fashionable Clothing: From the Sears Catalogs – Mid 1960s (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Overview

These styles will ring a bell not only with America’s baby-boomers, but also with current fashion trend watchers. Today’s interest in retro fashions makes this book as current as it would have been more than thirty years ago, but the quality is much better. Using today’s technology, it presents more than 400 color photographs of clothing styles for men, women, and children culled from 1964-67 Sears Catalogs. Images of mohair sweaters, cardigan sets, bloomer playsuits, madras jackets, checked gingham shifts with matching triangle scarves, ruffled rib-tickler tops and capri pants, Bermuda collars, wraparound skirts, maternity wear, and even days-of-the-week panties all combine to give us a look into what the average American was wearing, along with descriptions and original prices. Current prices are listed for some of the items for those interested in collectible vintage clothing from the era.

Designed & Signed: ‘50S & ’60s Glass, Ceramics & Enamel Wares by Georges Briard, Sascha Brasto (Schiffer Book for Collectors With Value Guide.) Review

I am quite surprised to see that there are not more reviews on this fabulous book. Not only is it beautiful and chock full of fabulous photos and estimated values, but it seems to be the only solid reference for Georges Briard and his equally talented peers. Expect to find nearly every pattern that Georges Briard ever designed and also some wonderful photos and information on: Higgins, Sasha Brastoff, Marc Bellaire, and even a few photos towards the back for Couroc, Fred Press (one of my faves), Ned Harris, Gabor, Gay Fad, etc…I probably refer to this book every other day! A must have for the mid century collector and especially for the fan of Briard and his designs. Thank you, Leslie Pina, for putting this book together!

Designed & Signed: ‘50S & ’60s Glass, Ceramics & Enamel Wares by Georges Briard, Sascha Brasto (Schiffer Book for Collectors With Value Guide.) Overview

Highly collectible household objects designed and signed by name artists of the 1950s and 1960s are presented here. The artists have become well known: Georges Briard, Sascha Brastoff, Mark Bellaire, Frances and Michael Higgins, and others. The modern styles of hundreds of glass tumblers, ash trays, and household accessories that are artist signed(often in gold)have become popular again, 40 years after they were made. The leading designer and marketing wizard of this style is Georges Briard about whom much written here, and many of his designs are pictured, along with much work by the other prominent featured artists. Here is mid-century design at its most popular level.

Grailpages: Original Comic Book Art And The Collectors Review

I’m rather new to the whole concept of buying / collecting comic book art, so I was rather intrigued by this book when it was recommended to me by my local shop. Looking for reviews, I came across one from professional comic writer Tony Isabella, who gave it a glowing review. This prompted me to go back and purchase the book. Like most collectors, I’d like to think I have pretty extensive knowledge of the comic book industry as well as a good handle on the history behind some of my favorite books. What I truly enjoyed about Steven Payne’s book was the insight into not only the mind of the collector, but also the artist who created the pages.
He does a great job of starting with an overview of the hobby, then discussing how much money some pieces have been sold for, and then (what I enjoyed the most) leading into the conversations he had and continues to have with fellow collectors. At the heart of it, all collectors have their stories about the “one book,” or that “one page.” This is what makes collecting fun. This is what Steven understands, the fun behind the hunt, the fun behind the “find,” and also the fun behind making the painful decision of selling a page.

I wasn’t looking for a “history” on collecting comic book art, I didn’t need a lesson as to the how’s and why’s, what I was looking for was exactly what I found, that being a great collection of thoughts, stories, and interviews with those who found, bought, lost, and penciled these amazing works of art.

Lastly, what I admire about Steven is that he wrote about what he enjoys. He took the time to research and write on a topic that hasn’t been extensively written about from which you can see the passion he himself has for this hobby.

Reading the book, I found myself recollecting my first purchase and my first “hunt.” I highly recommend this book to the experienced collector and the novice. It will remind you that the reason we’re collecting is that we enjoy and still see it as fun.

Grailpages: Original Comic Book Art And The Collectors Overview

Grailpages brings to light the burgeoning hobby of collecting the original, hand-drawn art that was used to create comic books! Beginning more as a novelty, the hobby of collecting original comic art has expanded to a point where some of the seminal pages commonly run more than ,000 each! Author Steven Alan Payne allows you to meet collectors from around the globe and hear their passion in their own words, as they detail collections ranging from a few key pages, to broad, encompassing collections of literally hundreds of pages of original comic art by such artists as Jack Kirby, John Romita Sr., and others! Balancing out the narratives are incisive interviews with industry pros, including writers Gerry Conway, Steve Englehart, and Roy Thomas, and exclusive perspectives from Silver Age artists Dick Giordano, Bob McLeod, Ernie Chan, Tony DeZuniga, and the unparalleled great, Gene Colan! Completing the book is a diverse sampling of breathtakingly beautiful original comic art, some lavishly presented in full-page spreads, including pages not seen publicly for decades!

Logging Long Ago (Schiffer Book for Collectors () Overview

Follow the history of logging as it unfolds across the United States, from the virgin forests of the east, to the towering redwoods of the West Coast. Historic photography, much of it beautifully hand tinted, captures images of the early woods, the woodsman, and the machines of this important industry. From its earliest days, logging was grueling work done in the isolation of virgin forests. Men worked and lived in rugged environments to provide the basic material with which to build a nation. This book illustrates their lives with over 350 historic postcard images taken from the early 1900s through the first half of the twentieth century. Stroll through stunning pictures of logging’s history, from the massive trees and forests, axes, saws, lumber camps, donkey engines, and river floats to the oxen, horses, trains, trucks, and sawmills. See the massive machinery that transformed the lumber industry in the twentieth century.
