The Complete Book of Mosaics Review

This is a pretty straightforward book, so the projects are tables, picture frames, candle holders, and a few strictly decorative items. The techniques section looked familiar to me, it’s from another, previous, book, probably one that I had seen in the library. Anyway, the technique section is sufficient to get an adult up and running with mosaicing using broken pottery/ceramics and glass squares.

My young daughters thought the projects depicted in the book were universally impressive. So we’re going to do a couple of similar mosaics.

All in all, good, basic book, perfect for the beginner, or someone looking for a selection of basic mosaic projects.

Layers: The Complete Guide to Photoshop’s Most Powerful Feature Overview

When Photoshop guru Matt Kloskowski was asked why he wrote this book, he replied, “It’s simple: I wanted to write the Photoshop book that I wished was around when I was learning Photoshop”. You’ve always known that layers were the key to understanding Photoshop, and now you have a resource to show you exactly how. With Matt’s clear, easy-to-follow, and concise writing style you’ll learn about:

  • Working with and managing multiple layers
  • Building multiple layered images
  • Blending layers together
  • Exactly which of the 25+ Blend Modes you need to worry about (there’s just a few)
  • Layer Masking and just how easy it is.
  • Using layers to enhance and retouch your photos
  • All of the tips and tricks that make using layers a breeze.

If you want to finally understand layers in Photoshop, this book is the one you’ve been waiting for.

Layers: The Complete Guide to Photoshop’s Most Powerful Feature Review

This is the book I wish I would have had the first day I started using Photoshop. I was given a copy of Photoshop CS3 for my birthday a couple of years ago and thought I could learn using the software by just tinkering with it. To my detriment, the tikering led to absolute frustation and I stopped using the program altogether for an extended period of time. A few months later, I decided that I would take another crack at it and purchased the Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book from the Adobe Creative Team. Although I found the tutorials in the book helpful, I felt that it failed to explain the reasoning behind the steps that needed to be taken in order to accompish a certain effect. There was way too much material cramped into the book without any logical order for a total beginner to digest. Matt’s book on the other hand was very refreshing, no enlightening!! A must for someone just starting in Photoshop. He is very humorous and explains “the hows and the whys” of Layers which is absolutely fundamental to learning PS. This book has given me a new hope since Matt has shown me the ways of the force.

Best Price Bruce Tegner’s Complete Book of Jujitsu

Available at Amazon :

Bruce Tegner’s Complete Book of Jujitsu Overview

This is the most complete collection of jujitsu katas ever presented in one volume. From among the hundreds of styles of jujitsu practiced in Japan during the past two centuries, Bruce Tegner has selected and adapted routines which are appropriate for developing and maintaining physical fitness, flexibility and agility. The katas are excellent for self-improvement and self-expression through body awareness and body movement.

Martial arts enthusiasts, teachers, and beginners will find valuable instructional reference material in this book.

Bruce Tegner’s Complete Book of Jujitsu Review

I own a small collection of books on Jujitsu, and this book by Tegner compares favorably with all of them. If you are serious about the martial art, you should have this book in your collection. If you have only a casual interest, this may be the only book you need.

Some of the Tegner book reviews border on slander. Despite what one reviewer said about Bruce Tegner’s books being unrealistic movie-style examples of the martial arts — quite the opposite is true. Tegner spent his life debunking the nonsense surrounding the Asian martial arts, and he suffered for it. Most of his books contain cautionary notes warning his readers not to be taken-in by choreographed martial arts scenes in the movies. He also dispelled the myth of the black belt as some sort of superman-killing machine. Similarly, he debunked the idea that one must embrace ancient traditions and mystical teachings in order to learn these skills (hence, the angry review about lack of “theory”). As for ethics, Tegner always cautioned that excessive force should not be used. He often omitted dangerous moves from his books and emphasized safety. His books were commonly found in school libraries when I was growing-up (60s).

If you are looking for a book on self-defense you can’t go wrong with “Bruce Tegner’s Complete Book of Self-Defense.” For that book, Tegner chose a handful of simple striking and grappling techniques from the jujitsu repertoire which are practical for the average person to apply in ordinary self-defense situations. A good companion volume to his self-defense book is “Self-Defense Nerve Centers & Pressure Points” by Bruce Tegner. As for this book, Tegner says it best, “The katas in this book have been selected from a number of old-style jujitsu methods…Much of the material has been modified to provide an activity that is appropriate for recreation, health and fitness, eye-hand-body coordination and self-improvement through physical self-expression.”

The Complete Guide to Digital Photography 4th ed. (A Lark Photography Book) Overview

The Complete Guide to Digital Photography has always been one of Sterling’s best-selling books on going digital—and, with over 600 illustrations, this completely updated edition contains all the information photographers need to create crisp images every time. Here are all the most exciting and up-to-date digital technologies, uncovered: larger-resolution sensors, built-in image stabilization, the latest improvements in cameras and lenses, printers and inks, and the newest versions of image-processing software such as Photoshop CS3. Other sections present the current developments in workflow managers like Lightroom, as well as analyses of raw-file development. A discussion of shooting and processing techniques offers advice on everything from portraits to still lifes. Written by one of the most bestselling and knowledgeable authors in the field, it’s an indispensable reference!

The Complete Guide to Digital Photography 4th ed. (A Lark Photography Book) Review

I have quite a few photography books – virtually all film and film processing related. All of those are looking pretty horribly dated. Even the most basic topics, like exposure and composition take on different implications in the digital world. As just one example, while relationships between aperture and shutter speed haven’t changed, the finality of the exposure isn’t as critical in digital, you have very different kinds of under and over-exposure considerations for post-processing, you have in-camera options (depending on the sophistication of the camera, of course) for adjustments, color curves, white balance, etc., and the results in terms of exposure artifacts and how you deal with them are just different.

What this means is that a book written for the digital photographer really should not be a re-work of an older film-based work. Freeman’s Complete Guide to Digital Photography is written 100% from the digital point of view. It’s brief bits of content regarding film cameras, formats, processing, lenses, etc. are only by way of explanation – and often the starting point for explaining why and how they are changing because of digital.

My purchase of this book is the result of a search in order to go back to square one. Like many, I’m late to digital, apart from owning a digital point and shoot camera or two. I wanted a book that didn’t rehash what I already know about photography and wanted one that had the right balance of content range and emphasis to get me off on the right footing. Unfortunately, almost every beginner’s digital photography book I found suffered from one or more of the following deficiencies: throwaway content (e.g., the history of photography, evolution of digital cameras, too much computer hardware content); film content; superficial coverage; deep coverage on only one or two topics (typically section after section on specific types of subjects such as portraits, landscapes, etc.); dated content (e.g., dead websites, old cameras, PCs, and software); and condescending content that talks down to the reader.

I wanted something that focused on the essence of digital photography. While you can’t avoid some of the above, I didn’t want it to dominate either. I found the type of coverage I was looking for in this book.

The format initially led me to think it was too superficial. A huge range of topics are presented, typically taking only 2-4 pages each. I picked it up and put it aside several times while comparing other books, finally noticing that content in each section sets you up for content in later sections in a rather subtle way. Some early chapter content on 35mm format and sensors, for example, leads directly to comments on viewfinder and LCD screen changes in a later chapter.

This book covers a lot of ground – cameras & sensors, in-camera processing, exposure, workflow, post processing and software, printing, PC and monitor considerations, file formats, cards (CF, XD, etc.), lenses, stabilization, and a lot more. The format – very brief topical chapters – is easy to read and, again, deceptively simple. The result is a beginner’s guide that adds up to more than the sum of its parts.

This book will be first on my recommended list for anyone starting out in digital photography.

The Complete Book Of Watercolors In A Weekend Review

I purchased several watercolor books to help me improve what I learned in class. This book is the best by far! Not only is it in spiral form- which lets you see while doing the lesson, but it separates the different things like shading, mixing colors, and how to’s so you can pick what you want to learn and concentrate on that subject alone. Recommend for anyone who is wanting to learn to paint with watercolor.

This book also gives great guides on buying clay, making a work space and many other opinions on how to become a professional potter. The Complete Guide to Night & Lowlight Photography (A Lark Photography Book) Review

Michael Freeman’s approach to night and lowlight digital photography will offend, irritate or confuse those carrying over what they learned about photography with film.

Freeman’s emphasis seems to be on shoot first – and then correct later.

In fact, the bulk of the book seems to be about post-processing in Photoshop or other image manipulation applications.

The truth is that film photographers often overlook or forget all the post-processing techniques that went into producing the “perfect” shots of yesterday – or what defects were forgiven. Dodging, burning in, rubbing hard on spots in the print, all those wonderful darkroom tricks have been replaced by a new generation of tricks.

Freeman provides a pretty good introduction to all these techniques, such as blending several exposures into one “perfect” shot. He also spends way too much time and space on equipment choice, but that is a quibble.

Overall, this is a good overview of basic night and lowlight photography. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a “treatise” on the subject. It absolutely is not for the film photographer. It introduces photographers ranging from beginner to advanced hobbyist to camera and post-processing techniques necessary for this specialized kind of photography. For what it is, it is good. Not truly “the complete guide”, but a decent start.

Jerry

The Complete Guide to Night & Lowlight Photography (A Lark Photography Book) Overview

Aimed at serious photographers, this lavishly illustrated guide takes a close look at every detail of lowlight photography. Michael Freeman (The Complete Guide to Digital Photography, Mastering Digital Black & White Photography) offers in-depth analysis of the many techniques photographers must master for night and lowlight shooting. Point by point, he discusses how to keep the camera steady, what lenses and camera settings to use, and how to best apply flash, bracketing, image-stabilizing, vibration reduction, and noise reduction. He also outlines common lowlight situations, from stormy weather and deep shade to twilight, moonlight, city lights, and nightclubs. Finally, Freeman examines software programs and processes that will increase the quality of lowlight photographs.
