Art Direction and Editorial Design (Abrams Studio) Overview

Thousands of magazines, newspapers, and journals are launched every year, but only a handful survive. What gives these few newcomers their staying power: content? branding? design?

Art Direction and Editorial Design is an accessible and comprehensive guide to visual journalism—the design of magazines and newspapers, both in their print and online forms. Illustrated with case studies, examples, practical exercises, and tips, the book explains the fundamentals of editorial design and layout. It provides an overview of current editorial design practices and explains how design and production for publications is organized while also tackling broad issues that can often make or break careers in the field.

Subjects covered include branding, how to create layouts, handling copy and images, design and production skills, and trends in the field. Included are interviews with and profiles of such leading influential figures as Neville Brody, Tyler Brûlée, David Carson, Felix Dennis, Fernando Gutiérrez, and Eamonn McCabe, as well as examples of work by M.F. Agha, Alexey Brodovitch, Willy Fleckhaus, Henry Wolf, Cipe Pineles, and Fabien Baron.

Art Direction and Editorial Design (Abrams Studio) Review

There’s an interesting magazine spread reproduced on page sixty of this fascinating book, it arrows only the typographic items like: folio, headlines, byline, body copy, credits, running heads, panel/sidebar copy, intro/second deck text, stand-first, pull quotes, captions/cutlines. Not arrowed are photos, illustrations, cartoons, graphics and other visual elements. I thought it was interesting because it sort of sums up the many items that publication designers work with all the time. Publications seem separate from other areas of print communication because of their regular appearance and they have a dedicated staff handling words and images. Because of this team effort it is not really practical to teach the subject in design college. The best learning curve is to join the editorial department of a title.

The book is essentially concerned with the look of publications and I thought it was impressively thorough in its coverage. Most of the illustration spreads feature magazines but newspapers are considered as well, including their supplements. The five chapters really do cover everything you’ll see in a weekly or monthly, explained by text and comprehensive captions. The pages are broken up by some interesting magazine profiles and some dummy pages to further explain editorial concepts: how grids shape design, changing impact with headlines and photos. The back pages feature work from well known magazine designers from the last few decades, a glossary and index.

The book’s production is as impressive as the contents, printed on glossy paper in 200 screen with a layout that is easy to follow considering the large amount of information. If I have a criticism it is that most of the illustrations come from publications that are aimed at a design receptive readership. It would have been useful, I think, to have included some publications where design is not so obvious: down-market celebrity magazines or titles for children (like the brilliant Sesame Street Magazine) or trade weeklies. All these need designers to be just as creative as those on many of the titles that have spreads in ‘Editorial design’

I think it’s worth pointing out that this is not a ‘how to do magazine layouts’ book but a detailed look at the nuts and bolts of what makes up the visual side of a publications editorial.

Flower Designs (Design Source Books) Overview

A stunning collection of lovely flowers including jasmine, roses, irises, lilies, oleanders and many more. Borders, frames, patterns and motifs are included, offering a wealth of inspiration and an abundance of ideas.

Flower Designs (Design Source Books) Review

The designs are very good and can be used for lots of different crafts. The black line masters could be enlarged or reduced in size to suit many projects e.g, glass painting, embroidery, applique, machine embroidery, cross stitch, stencil printing and more. They can be a starting point for individualising the design to your own needs by adding the flower designs together to make interesting and creative work.

Preserving Cultural Landscapes in America (Center Books on Contemporary Landscape Design) Overview

Historic preservation efforts began with an emphasis on buildings, especially those associated with significant individuals, places, or events. Subsequent efforts were expanded to include vernacular architecture, but only in recent decades have preservationists begun shifting focus to the land itself. Cultural landscapes — such as farms, gardens, and urban parks — are now seen as projects worthy of the preservationist’s attention. To date, however, no book has addressed the critical issues involved in cultural landscape preservation.

In Preserving Cultural Landscapes in America, Arnold R. Alanen and Robert Z. Melnick bring together a distinguished group of contributors to address the complex academic and practical questions that arise when people set out to designate and preserve a cultural landscape. Beginning with a discussion of why cultural landscape preservation is important, the authors explore such topics as the role of nature and culture, the selling of heritage landscapes, urban parks and cemeteries, Puerto Rican neighborhoods in New York City, vernacular landscapes in small towns and rural areas, ethnographic landscapes, Asian American imprints on the western landscape, and integrity as a value in cultural landscape preservation.

Contributors: Arnold R. Alanen, University of Wisconsin-Madison • Luis Aponte-Perés, University of Massachusetts-Boston • Gail Lee Dubrow, University of Washington, Seattle • Richard Francaviglia, University of Texas, Arlington • Donald L. Hardesty, University of Nevada, Reno • Catherine Howett, University of Georgia, Athens • Robert Z. Melnick, University of Oregon • Patricia M. O’Donnell, Historic Preservation Consultant, Charlotte, Vermont • David Schuyler, Franklin & Marshall College

Preserving Cultural Landscapes in America (Center Books on Contemporary Landscape Design) Review

This book is well worth your time. If you have any interest in preservation and /or landscape you should read this book. It is very thought provoking and intelligently written. It poses more questions than it answers…which I believe is the intention of the editors. Because this book raises many questions and issues, I would recommend it for a book discussion club or a seminar class.

The Graphic Design Business Book Overview

• Authoritative advice on every aspect of running a design business

• Expert contributors include Leonard DuBuff, Richard Weisgrau, Eva Doman Bruck, and many more

General small-business advice just doesn’t work for a graphic design business. What graphic designers need is The Graphic Design Business Book, packed with directly relevant strategies for creating a business plan, managing a studio, presenting portfolios, marketing on the Web, keep clients happy, and more, including sample contract forms and listings of professional organizations—all contributed by experts in their fields. Every graphic designer needs a copy of The Graphic Design Business Book.

The Graphic Design Business Book Review

I am quite surprised just how useful this book is. Everything is here from a single freelancer working out of his bedroom (and basic rules about taxing the bedroom) to a full corporation with partners who rent commercial space.

Specific topics covered here are simply not found in general business books. “How does one put a price on creative effort?” This books describes the methods! My favorite part is the negotiation chapter, which empowers artists with techniques to stand firm (yet polite) against those unscrupulous businessmen seeking to exploit the artist. The chapter finishes with sample contracts–an unexpected bonus.

This book does not get 5 stars because it is a business supplement, not an exhaustive resource.

Art Nouveau Designs (Design Source Books)

Art Nouveau Designs (Design Source Books) Overview

Packed with beautiful Art Nouveau designs—flowers and leaves, birds and animals, figures, borders, frames, and more.

Art Nouveau Designs (Design Source Books) Review

Judy Balchin’s “Art Nouveau Designs” uses simple, but elegantly rendered, line drawings to give the beginning user a real sense of the flow and curve of the Art Nouveau style. The patterns are uncluttered enough for easy tracing and transfer, with plenty of room for the more advanced artist to add their own embellishments. Black and white illustrations are ideal for photocopying, and can be scaled using a modern copy machine that does it automatically.

My only caveats are that the book is heavily skewed towards floral designs (about 15 pages out of the 32 page total), and that the human figures are rendered in a flatter style (see simple) than you’ll find in similar motifs elsewhere, especially in reproductions of period references. That being said, this book is an excellent resource for those new to the exuberant Art Nouveau style, and a good way to get a feel for the structure underlying the works of Mucha, Mackintosh, Lalique, and many others.

Recommended for: needleworkers (embroidery and crewel), paper artists, graphic designers

Less helpful to: jewelry designers, stained glass artists, beadworkers
