A Little Book of the Green Man (Little Books) Review
One man’s search for the truth and origins of the ‘Green Man’. Even today people decorate and protect their gardens with symbols of the green man. I have one in my garden; with a hummingbird, of course. Green Man origins appear to be pagan, but the author has discovered images and expressions of the green man in ancient poems and old manuscripts, in Christian churches, Jain Temples, in May Day processions, associated with The Knights Templar, Celtic, Roman, Greek and Egyptian traditions. A common theme seems to be a fusion between man and the vegetable world. Some feel that the green man is the Old Guardian of the Forest or symbolizes the birth and resurrection of all life. Fascinating reading.

The Little Corset Book: A Workbook on Period Underwear (Little Costume Workbooks) Review
This teeny volume shows b/w hand-drawn construction diagrams for reproduction corsets from the eras of 1700, 1750, 1860, and 1890, plus basic chemise and basic drawers. Drawings are very clear, and include some suggestions on fabric selection and decoration. Text covers step-by-step construction, fabric/notion requirements, and a chart to assist in getting the right number of the right size of corset bones. Anyone who has attempted a corset without instructions has probably ended the attempt in frustration, but this inexpensive guide and a friend to help with fitting, that will change. No historical info is included, this volume is about simplified construction and it hits the mark. Not for beginning sewers, but that’s because of the project nature, not the book. The only improvement I’d like to see would be more detailed guidelines to determining correct dimensions of cut pieces, maybe even fullsize pieces. But the information contained would be worth twice the full price. Certainly cheaper than a single period pattern for a corset, regardless of your source, and those are a gamble with regard to adequate instructions. This compact book is ideal for amateur costumers, especially Ren Faire or re-enactment folks. Professional costumers will probably not find any new information here, but it’s really a gem.

The Little Black Book of Style Review
This book is the perfect Sunday afternoon book. Beautifully illustrated I enjoyed leafing through whilst curled up on the sofa. Whilst none of the information is new, most people acknowledge the power of the LBD, it is a good summary. The style of writing is relaxed and informal and it is a nice break from magazines. The interviews with celebrities were interesting to read, and it has made me begin to re-assess my wardrobe…

The Little Book of Layouts: Good Designs and Why They Work Review
This book has a large collection of layouts. Useful for a reference and to see what other people are doing. I wouldn’t call a lot of the layouts ‘outstanding’, and the book is A5 in size, so a lot of the designs span the spread which makes them difficult to view. Despite that, it still is a nice little reference book.

The thing that I liked about this book was that instead of merely serving up a collection of what the author deems “good design” (don’t get me wrong, I own lots of “inspiration” books), there were comments provided for why the design worked.
kind of ok; not very technical – alice –
i’m not trained in graphic design, but the brief tips on each page seemed simplistic to me. example: “the same neutral colors are used throughout this brochure.” um, ok… so? i guess the book is a decent collection of photos of layouts that the author liked, but it did not give me a systematic way of thinking about design.
