Bevels and Jewels Stained Glass Pattern Book: 83 Designs for Workable Projects Review

The only reason I gave this book a 4 is all designs need to be enlarged, and there are no pictures of the finished designs.

Below is a portion of the publisher’s note within the book, that will give you some good information.

“Bevels and glass jewels add sparkling points of interest to any stained glass project. This book includes 83 floral, geometric, bird, butterfly, fish, Art Nouveau and Victorian style patterns that have been specially designed to highlight the faceted and shaped glass pieces that appear within them. The patterns appear in square, rectangular, circular, octagonal and free-form shapes and can be used for lightcatchers, door and window panels, box tops and glass projects. Bevels and jewels are no more difficult to incorporate into a pattern than regular stained glass sections.”

Later in this same section they go on further about the contents of the book.

“The illustrations on pages 4-7 show the true size (and in some cases two views) of all the bevels and jewels that appear within the patterns on pages 8-64. The patterns, however, appear within the book at half their actual size and will need to be xeroxed at a 200% enlargement in order for the bevels and jewels to fit. The measurements that are printed next to each pattern give the dimensions to which it will be enlarged when doubled in size.”

My impressions of the book, as I just received it are positive. There are some pretty nice designs inside from the tradition looking door insert types to some pretty intricate bird, fish and flower designs. None except for the cover are shown as a picture, all are sketches and drawings. Inside both covers are drawings with suggested colors of 11 of the designs within, but the rest only have the patterns in black and white. All patterns have other patterns on the back side.

Some details are:

8 butterfly designs (some with flowers)

3 birds

3 fish

7 flowers (distinctly flowers and not stylized geometric renditions)

The bulk of the book, is stylized flower or geometric designs. Really neat looking ones. This is not surprising as the bevels and jewels are limited to specific geometric shapes.

All in all a decent book.

The Architectural Pattern Book: A Tool for Building Great Neighborhoods Overview

Documents the revival of the traditional architectural pattern book as a means of implementing urban design. From the firm that produced The Urban Design Handbook comes a practical guide to developing and using pattern books—a tradition stretching back to Vitruvius and Palladio, and the source of many beautiful houses—to design neighborhoods today. It describes techniques and working methods for contemporary development and construction processes. 200 color illustrations.

The Architectural Pattern Book: A Tool for Building Great Neighborhoods Review

Most of us like architectural books because we think, or possibly just dream of building our own ULTIMATE house. Here, however, is a book not on building a house, but on building an entire neighborhood.

It starts with a bit of history, the pattern books written in roman times. It brings them up to date with a survey of several American neighborhoods dating from turn of the century times. And finally it goes on to show what the authors have done as they designed blocks, sub-divisions and the like. It is intended to show what can be done to replace the common cookie cutter houses common in recent developments. It is a fascinating book that leads to thinking.

Pattern Book of New Orleans Architecture, A Overview

A stunning presentation of nineteenth-century color gouache and watercolor archival drawings and paintings of New Orleans neighborhoods from the New Orleans Notarial Archives, this volume pays tribute to the tremendous architectural richness of the Crescent City in its presentation of what old, renovated, restored, and new buildings not only might look like, but how they should look. An educational tool, home-builder’s resource, architectural pattern book, city planner’s handbook, and visual treasure, this beautiful volume invites its readers to walk down the avenues of New Orleans past to examine the footprints of the city’s original edifices in preparation for rebuilding and restoring the city to its authentic self. Photographs of examples of house types, historic plans for each house, and contemporary adaptive use floor plans to fit the original blueprints developed by architects are among the highlights of this volume.

Organized by type of house, this handsome book also includes separate sections covering the history of the archival drawings, neighborhood plans, and information about the surveyors and engineers who designed the city. The types of New Orleans residences included range from the French colonial plantation home to the Creole cottage, the American townhouse, and a variety of shotgun styles. In a conversational yet erudite tone, award-winning author and architectural historian Roulhac B. Toledano examines the characteristic elements of each architectural style and discusses the authentic materials and techniques used for original construction.

Building by the Book: Pattern Book Architecture in New Jersey

Building by the Book: Pattern Book Architecture in New Jersey Review

This book was most helpful to me in my quest for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Finding subject matter specifically targeted for Pattern houses has been difficult.

For me, this book would have been worth purchasing just for the introduction. I especially valued the section on Foursquare houses; my home is a Foursquare, which is part of the basis of my nomination. The Sears Roebuck catalog houses and Craftsman sections were also very interesting.

In all, “Building by the Book” reflects a thorough study in what is probably a neglected period of building, whereby middle class owners were enabled to build architect-designed homes which would otherwise have been reserved for the wealthy. Pattern books also provided direction for local builders.

As a preservationist and owner of a brick Foursquare classical revival pattern house built in the 1920’s Craftsman era, I am hopeful that more of these homes will be saved for future appreciation. They generally exhibit a uniqueness that precedes the builder/developer subdivisions we see today.

I had hoped to find some history on the “Architect’s Small House Service Bureau of the United States, Incorporated”, active in the 1920’s, which was administered by the American Institute of Architects and from which my pattern house was derived. If anyone has information, I’d love to have know.

Pattern houses were a boon to average citizens here and throughout the United States, enabling them to experience a share of the American Dream “that every American should be able to own a single-family house on its own green acre”. The New Jersey study is an educational guide applicable across the nation.

Art Nouveau Stained Glass Pattern Book (Dover Pictorial Archive Series) Review

This book has lots of doable projects. I would classify the skill level as beginner to intermediate, but be prepared to come up with you own color schemes because there are no photographs of completed projects.

About 95% of the patterns have floral themes: lots of tulips, roses, lilies and other generic flowers. There are also a few pattern with women’s profiles, two peacocks, a fish, and a very impressive butterfly pattern (I have seen this one for sale at the auction sites several times). All-in-all this book would be a nice addition to your collection.

Art Nouveau Stained Glass Pattern Book (Dover Pictorial Archive Series) Overview

stained glass projects using all the well-known themes of Art Nouveau: swirling forms, florals, peacocks and sensuous women. Sourcebook for use or for inspiration. 104 projects on 60 plates.
