Lonely Planet takes you for a trip through every country in Africa in this oversized pictorial. Though the focus of this book is clearly on the beautiful scenery, wildlife and, especially, people of Africa, each country does get a few words about its history and travel highlights and a couple of short, simplistic essays open and conclude the book.
The pictures truly are gorgeous and the book effectively demonstrates the stunning diversity and expanse of the continent. The writing in the book, however, is somewhat less consistent, often providing only trite or (somewhat characteristically of lonely planet) unduly rose-colored descriptions. You will find a lot to like and learn, but may also find yourself rolling your eyes when you read about how welcoming the people of Mogadishu are and how “the people of Africa” enjoy drumming. For the most part, though, this book will provide you with scenery for your imagining and motivation for your further study.

Richard Doyle’s Fairyland Coloring Book (Dover Pictorial Archives) Review
Doyle’s fairies have a childlike quality that doesn’t entirely appeal to me. They are often like little children playing dress-up. The drawings are very well produced and easy to color. Highly recommend it.

“Old-Fashioned Nautical Illustrations” is a wonderful additon to the Dover Publications library of clip art books/CD-ROMs. The 425 images in this particular collection range from the expected (sailboats, seahorses, lighthouses,etc.,) to the wonderfully silly (frogs rowing a boat; doughty sailors carrying fainting damsels from the sea , etc.,). The CD-ROM is accessible via both Windows and MAC, installs easily, and is a breeze to use. Each image is available in 6 different formats (TIFF,PICT,EPS,BMP,JPEG and GIF). At under , this would make a great, inexpensive gift for someone who loves all things nautical.

The Book of Signs (Dover Pictorial Archive) Review
“The Book of Signs” is an illustration-rich collection of Byzantine, medieval and related European symbols. The Dover Publications edition is a clean softcover edition of the work which is printed in the author Rudolf Koch’s “magere deutsche” typeface (a Gothic / old-style German typeface similar to those used in Germany in the 19th century and earlier).
Useful to the medievalist, the occultist as well as the fantasy roleplayer, the collection includes nearly 500 different symbols collected in 14 chapters. Symbols include Christian, astrological, botanical, and chemical ones from the Byzantine and European traditions; personal and family signs such as early monograms, stonemason’s signs and armorial signs; and the Norse runes. The signs themselves are woodcuts, which combined with the older style Germanic typeface give the book a distinctive look. Chapters include a short introduction and most signs include a short description.
The book’s strength lies in its wide range of medieval symbols and its evocative visual look (woodcut symbols and German typeface). As a research tool it has limited utility, but for its graphic appearance it is a good choice for the layman. On a side note for AD&D gamers and World of Greyhawk enthusiasts, this work was used as inspiration by Gary Gygax for many of the symbols presented in the World of Greyhawk folio and 1983 boxed set.

Hats off…….or in this case, boots off, to Larry Green!. The “First Projects for Wood Carvers” is a wish come true for beginners. Clear, step by step instructions for creating three seperate projects. The cowboy boot, Gandolf the Dog and the Nativity is wonderfully illustrated and so easy to carve. My daughter and I have spent many enjoyable hours creating these projects. I believe this book is a must for beginner and intermediate Wood Carvers.

Art Nouveau Stained Glass Pattern Book (Dover Pictorial Archive Series) Review
This book has lots of doable projects. I would classify the skill level as beginner to intermediate, but be prepared to come up with you own color schemes because there are no photographs of completed projects.
About 95% of the patterns have floral themes: lots of tulips, roses, lilies and other generic flowers. There are also a few pattern with women’s profiles, two peacocks, a fish, and a very impressive butterfly pattern (I have seen this one for sale at the auction sites several times). All-in-all this book would be a nice addition to your collection.
