Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Late 1950s (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Overview
Meet the book that defined fashion for generations of Americans in the twentieth century-the Sears Catalog. European couture designs were beautiful in fashion magazines but the average person with an average income shopped for clothing in department stores. The Sears Catalog brought household goods and fashionable clothing to everyone, whether they had access to a department store or not. Pictured here is clothing for men, women, and children taken from actual Sears Catalogs from the late 1950s, along with descriptions and original prices. Current values for some items are included as a reference guide for collectors of 1950s vintage clothing. Who can forget slim sheaths and whirly skirts, rolled-up dungarees and pedal pushers, bouffant slips and taffeta prom gowns, fraternity prep jackets and children’s western wear? With more than 400 color photographs, this book offers a nostalgic look into fashionable clothing of an era which defined an entire generation.
Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Late 1950s (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Review
Joy Shih and Schiffer Publications have done it again. Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Late 1950’s is an excellent Primary resource for Costume and Fashion Designers. I find that the layout and the organization of this book much better than Schiffer’s “early 1950’s”. Unfortunately it only focuses on Sears Catolgues’ perspective of this era, which is only middle America, blue collar, suburbia. I give this book for stars for its’ use of primary resource, clear division of clothing types, reproduction of true fifties color, and actual cost of garments today and yesterday

Fashionable Clothing: From the Sears Catalogs – Mid 1960s (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Review
Sure, “Radical Rags” is an amazing book, but very few could actually afford, or indeed have the guts, to wear many of the designs it features. This book shows how the look of the ’60s trickled down to the middle American masses. Don’t be put off by the Sears name–many of the outfits here are divine, and some are downright outlandish. Even the prim suits look fresh and cute. Unlike some other books on vintage clothing from this publisher, this one features actual source photos from the period, so the hair-dos, make-up, accessories and overall look are accurate. The companion volumes on the late ’60s and 1950s are equally fab.
Fashionable Clothing: From the Sears Catalogs – Mid 1960s (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Overview
These styles will ring a bell not only with America’s baby-boomers, but also with current fashion trend watchers. Today’s interest in retro fashions makes this book as current as it would have been more than thirty years ago, but the quality is much better. Using today’s technology, it presents more than 400 color photographs of clothing styles for men, women, and children culled from 1964-67 Sears Catalogs. Images of mohair sweaters, cardigan sets, bloomer playsuits, madras jackets, checked gingham shifts with matching triangle scarves, ruffled rib-tickler tops and capri pants, Bermuda collars, wraparound skirts, maternity wear, and even days-of-the-week panties all combine to give us a look into what the average American was wearing, along with descriptions and original prices. Current prices are listed for some of the items for those interested in collectible vintage clothing from the era.

Segmented Wood Turning (Schiffer Book for Woodworkers) Review
I was fortunate enough to see a live demo that the author gave at my turning club’s meeting. Prior to that, I hadn’t had much interest in open-segmented turning. It’s not that I didn’t think it was interesting, I just didn’t think I had the equipment needed for such precise work, or the patience or time needed to devote to it. But seeing Bill’s work, as well as seeing how easy he makes it to do this type of work, changed my mind completely! I immediately bought a copy of his book (which is a steal considering the detail he put into it, and how well written it is!) and set about making my first piece, following the example he includes in the book. My friends and family were amazed when they saw this first piece and encouraged me to do more of them! And I couldn’t believe how easy it was to do. My hat is off to Bill. He’s a great demonstrator, and does a phenominal job putting that skill into words and pictures. This book is a must own for any turner!
Be sure to check out the author’s website:
