The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today’s Artists Overview

The most thorough guide to watercolor materials and techniques ever assembled in a single volume, this is the book for anyone working with watercolors, from beginners to experienced artists looking to develop more professional skills. Starting with a comprehensive, up-to-date review of the tools and techniques required to master the art of watercolor, the book then presents detailed lessons in basic drawing skills. Design concepts are explored: line and shape, light and dark, perspective, and composition. All the major watercolor painting techniques are shown: methods for laying washes, preserving white areas, glazing, establishing form, creating textural effects, lifting color, masking, and using resists. With color the driving force behind the author’s whole approach to painting and his distinctive “organic” handling of the medium, color theories and strategies are clearly explained and applied to a wide range of subjects-still life, figures, landscapes, and architecture-some of which pair watercolors with other mediums such as gouache, pastel, and collage. An ongoing reference source, this is a book that watercolorists will turn to again and again for guidance.

The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today’s Artists Review

I have way too many watercolor books (buying WC books is addictive, although not as addictive as buying new colors). This book is one of my absolute favorites, and one I find myself returning to over and over. I am a very big fan of the entire “Materials and Techniques for Today’s Artists” series, and I own their Drawing Book, Pen & Ink Book, Pastel Book, Acrylic Book, and Oil Painting Book.

All of the books in this series seem to follow the same basic format. The first third or so of the book cover materials in great detail. The emphasis is on the types of materials that you need, options available, and characteristics of specific brand names. If you’re a beginning watercolorist lost among all of the brands of brushes, paints, and paper available then this will be a great resource. The middle 3rd of the book focuses on general techniques, followed by a series of discussions related to specific subject matter. The final third focuses on mixed media – and in my opinion this is the area where Dewey’s books really shine. I think he’s a great pastelist and uses pastels and watercolors together to do some amazing stuff.

I view this is a great book for folks that know at least a little bit about watercolor painting and are interested in getting into more depth and detail. I probably wouldn’t recommend the book for absolute beginners, because I think absolute beginners would find the book a little overwhelming. Some initial questions that absolute beginners might ask (like “What colors should I have on a basic palette”) aren’t really addressed until pretty deep into the book. For an absolute beginner, something like Jack Reid’s “Watercolor Basics: Let’s Get Started” or Charles Reid’s “Painting Flowers in Watercolor With Charles Reid” could be a better choice. But if you’ve seen enough of watercolor to know that you want to know a lot more about it, this book is a great resource.

The Penland Book of Ceramics: Masterclasses in Ceramic Techniques Overview

“This book is valuable for its insights into the working techniques and philosophies of established ceramic artists.”—Library Journal. “One of those rare publications that actually meets its claim to give ‘master classes’ in ceramic technique. As a context for enjoying the inventive ways in which these artists make their ceramics, it is difficult to see how the formula could be bettered.”—Ceramic Review.

The Penland Book of Ceramics: Masterclasses in Ceramic Techniques Review

THE PENLAND BOOK OF CERAMICS is certainly large and colorful. The Penland School of Crafts, located in the mountains of North Carolina, seems large enough to be considered a community. “Today the school encompasses 43 buildings located on 400 acres of land. Each year approximately 1,200 people come to Penland for instruction and another 12,000 pass through as visitors.” (p. 205). I expected to find more pictures in the book of the interesting three-dimensional conglomeration on the cover, which is probably not a bunch of bananas, but maybe the artist thought it was. The colors are similar to the “Yellowstone Rhododendron, 2001″ and “Mountain Magnolia, 2001″ shown on page 53. Even if it is supposed to be a bunch of bananas, that would not make it the most surreal thing in this book.

I have had difficulty thinking about objects that appear to be weird in three dimensions, so the complexity of many of the pieces seems miraculous to me, but the step-by-step explanations of the process of constructing a few items demonstrate the possibilities of getting there bit by bit. The first artist featured in the book, Clara “Kitty” Couch, produces terra cotta vessels that open out at the top with an edge so thin, looking so flimsy, that the first picture in the hands on series, “Rolling out the slab” (p. 17), showing the clay under a rolling pin, ought to produce an immense leap in the understanding of how the material is originally flattened before it is formed. There are also pictures of Joe Bova “Rolling out a 12-pound (5.4 kg) slab to a thickness of at least 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) on a piece of plywood” (p. 152) and Mary Barringer “applying texture with a tectured roller” (p.198). A description of Kitty Couch’s work is called “Contemplative Coilings” (p. 12), but she does not try to make it all from one long rope. She describes adding flat coils, one at a time, “When the base has become firm so that it can support itself.” (p. 13). More complicated layers of clay were used to produce Becky Gray’s “Autumn Leaf Bowl” shown on page 24.

The works which I found most imaginative were by Sergei Isupov on pages 168 to 185. By painting faces at odd places, such as under the armpits of a figure called “To Cast a Spell” (pp. 168, 176 – 185 and back cover), the spooky line of Rilke’s poem, “Archaic Torso of Apollo,” `there is no spot that does not see you’ (Translated by Walter Kaufmann in 20 German Poets, pp. 220-223) seems aptly illustrated.

There are some specialized techniques and equipment in this book that I will not try to describe. Some combinations are so much like architecture that it is not surprising to see a box that actually looks like a building, Angelica Pozo’s “White Oak Temple Box, 1997. 17 3/4 x 10 3/4 x 16 inches (46.6 x 27.3 x 40.6 cm). Cut, carved, extruded, press-molded, and hand-formed mosaic tile from terra cotta; terra sigillata; glaze cone 04; glass mosaic. Photo by artist.” (p. 27).

The Pencil Box: A Treasury of Time-Tested Drawing Techniques and Advice Review

I just got this book and read most of it on my vacation. Probably it would make more sense to read it in smaller chunks or for specific projects. The book is organized by topics, starting with materials. From there it goes to techniques, then landscapes and portraits. I can’t remember all the topics now. I would guess that the last 20-25% of the book presents articles on colored pencils. I haven’t gotten to that section yet, but glancing at it, I see that it covers almost every topic that was in the colored pencil class I took.

The great thing about this book is that it has culled articles from American Artist magazine for the contents. I can’t afford to subscribe to that year after year, so having the articles I really want collected in a separate book saves money and time. If you are not into colored pencils, which I am not, the book is still worth it.

The Pencil Box: A Treasury of Time-Tested Drawing Techniques and Advice Overview

Almost all artists have room for improvement when it comes to drawing, the fundamental skill of all realistic art. Now they can tap the proven techniques and collective drawing wisdom of more than a dozen of The Artist Magazine’s and North Light Books’ most venerable artists. The book features:

-Solid, easy-to-follow advice for drawing in a realistic style

-14 step-by-step demonstrations culled from some of the best art instruction published today

-A range of popular subjects, including landscapes, portraits, still lifes and seascapes

The Pencil Box covers basic supplies and tips for improvement in addition to dozens of drawing techniques, so readers will find everything they need to start drawing better in one comprehensive package.

Contributors include Cathy Johnson, Bill Tilton, Jerry McClish, Stanley Maltzman, Janie Gildow and Paul Leveille.

Custom Knits: Unleash Your Inner Designer with Top-Down and Improvisational Techniques Review

If you make the mistake of judging this book on just the patterns (or worse, the cheeky photography), go back and take another look! If I were allowed to keep only one knitting book of the many I have on my shelves, this is the one I would choose. This has nothing to do with the fact that I loved Wendy’s blog & designs before she published this book. The title is Custom Knits for one very precise reason– using the suggestions and detailed directions in the book, a knitter could knit just about any garment desired. Right now I am knitting a v-neck, cabled cardigan with set in sleeves based on Tang, which is presented as a turtleneck pullover in the book. What Wendy has done here is what I had been hoping someone would do for years– take the somewhat convoluted and wordy concepts Barbara Walker offers up in Knitting from the Top and distilled them into clear, followable directions and diagrams… with specific patterns to follow, if you so desire. For a a new knitter, the patterns offered here are simple and classic with a modern twist, but have the amazing benefit of being knit in one piece! No more knitting in pieces & laboriously seaming, only to discover that labor of love doesn’t even fit! Seamless knits can be tried on as you go. For the intermediate or advanced knitter, this book will set your imagination free! Seriously, sometimes I go to sleep at night thinking about how I can change a pattern in the book to make it into the garment I’m envisioning. That is what makes this book unique and invaluable. It’s NOT just another book of patterns for knitters to slavishly follow. It is a book that gives you the power to knit whatever your knitterly brain can dream!

Custom Knits: Unleash Your Inner Designer with Top-Down and Improvisational Techniques Overview

Along with being pleasurable and satisfying, knitting can sometimes be frustrating: the turtleneck that looked so fabulous on the model is too bulky for your body, or the cardigan you spent countless hours on just doesn?t fit right. Herein lies the beauty of Custom Knits, which teaches knitters how to use improvisational techniques to achieve spectacular results?and to unleash their inner designers.

?

Wendy Bernard, creator of the popular blog Knit and Tonic, provides 25 original designs for sweaters of nearly every type, plus variations, most knitted in one piece starting at the top, a method that allows you to try on as you go, alter as desired, and essentially design on the fly. ?Make It Your Own? prompts in each pattern suggest easy alterations to suit your style and body type. And an in-depth reference section teaches how to alter key sweater elements, for example, change a crewneck to a V-neck, add sleeves to a vest, and much more. For the truly adventurous, the book concludes with guidelines for knitting sweaters with no pattern at all.

?

Bernard?s friendly writing style and photographer Kimball Hall?s lively images create an inviting book of beautiful designs and key techniques that a knitter can use to customize nearly every garment she knits from now on.

This is a well-thought out, well-presented book that answers pretty much any question you have about routing. For a weekend woodworker like myself, it cleared up a lot of questions I had about using a router as a hand tool and in a table.
