Kanji De Manga Volume 1: The Comic Book That Teaches You How To Read And Write Japanese! (Manga University Presents) Overview

The comic book that teaches you how to read and write Japanese! This brand-new series from Manga University uses original comic artwork to teach readers how to identify and write the most common Japanese kanji ideographs. Volume 1 introduces 80 basic kanji that all Japanese schoolchildren are required to learn before entering the third grade. Subsequent volumes in the series will focus on more difficult kanji and kanji compounds. Each page features its own comic strip, kanji pronunciation guide, stroke order, and English explanations.

Kanji De Manga Volume 1: The Comic Book That Teaches You How To Read And Write Japanese! (Manga University Presents) Review

While I do like these books, and I have found them to be useful in my and my families learning of kanji, they are organized in a completely non-sensical way. At the back of each book, they proclaim that they are useful in studying for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficieny Test) exams. They are useful.. just not comprehensive.

For example, Volume 1, which has 80 kanji in it to learn, (despite what the paragraph at the back of the book says) is NOT the full list of kanji you would need to learn to pass the first level exam (JLPT4). The JLPT4 test requires 103 kanji at the current time, as well as like 700 vocab words, and basic grammar and listening skills. If you were to just study this book, and nothing else, you would surely fail.

At first I thought maybe the authors had just made an error and meant to say that the books were organized loosely based on the elementary school grade level. However, this is also not true. An example of this is 花 (はな ”hana”) which is a grade level 1 kanji taught to first graders, but is in fact in Volume 2.

The only other glaring problem I’ve found with these books is the lack of any sort of English definition lookup or table of contents. While you can look the kanji up if you know the spelling in kana, being able to look it up in English would’ve been really nice. However, the books are cheap and fun and pretty easy to use.

The Early Illuminated Books (The Illuminated Books of William Blake, Volume 3) Review

This beautifully produced volume contains five of Blake’s early works in relief etching (his illuminated books from 1788 to 1793 save “The Songs of Innocence” from 1789 – published in volume 2 in this series). They are the early tract like “All Religions Are One” and “There Is No Natural Religion”, then the fable of “Thel”, the magnificent “Marriage of Heaven and Hell” (one of Blake’s most popular works), and the beautiful “Visions of the Daughters of Albion”.

This volume really four books bound in one. The tracts are treated as one book, then each of the others individually. Each sub-volume has its own introduction and commentary and each plate is given its own page and most have the text on the left page with the plate on the right.

There are also alternative plates provided for additional study.

As with all the volumes in this series, the production values are high, as is the scholarship. A volume you can be proud to have on your shelf.

The Early Illuminated Books (The Illuminated Books of William Blake, Volume 3) Overview

The core of William Blake’s vision, his greatness as one of the British Romantics, is most fully expressed in his Illuminated Books, masterworks of art and text intertwined and mutually enriching. Made possible by recent advances in printing and reproduction technology, the publication of new editions of Jerusalem and Songs of Innocence and of Experience in 1991 was a major publishing event. Now these two volumes are followed by The Early Illuminated Books and Milton, A Poem. The books in both volumes are reproduced from the best available copies of Blake’s originals and in faithfulness and accuracy match the acclaimed standards set by Jerusalem and Songs. These two volumes are uniform in format and binding with the first two volumes.

The Early Illuminated Books comprises All Religions Are One and There Is No Natural Religion; Thel; Marriage of Heaven and Hell; and Visions of the Daughters of Albion. Milton, A Poem, second only to Jerusalem in extent and ambition, is accompanied by Laoco?n, The Ghost of Abel, and On Homer’s Poetry.

The Book of Boy Trouble, Volume 2 Review

This new Boy trouble anthology of love stories among boys is so much better than the first! It features new as well of old artists (Howard Cruse, Craig Bostick, Steve McIsaac, and my fave Tim Fish among others), and the stories’ tone and style vary from the funny, the homely, the romantic, to the weeird, the dramatic and the horrific. An anthology to savour, at par with the famed Young Bottoms in Love!

The Book of Boy Trouble, Volume 2 Overview

The second volume of The Book of Boy Trouble further expands the zine?s influence and relevance. Its roster of 24 male and female cartoonists spans generations, exploring the alternative gay boy experience and aesthetic from a host of diverse perspectives. Included are works by queer zinester and scene-maker Anonymous Boy, legendary underground cartoonist Howard Cruse, Bitter Girl?s Joan Hilty, Andy Hartzell, author of the critically acclaimed graphic novel Fox Bunny Funny, and Tim Fish, creator and editor of Young Bottoms in Love.

Garfield Fat Cat Three Pack Volume III (No.3) Review

I loved this book. Being one of the earlier books in the Garfield collection Jim Davis had many fresh ideas to work with. You may be surprized that Garfield looks slightly different , but the attitude stays the same. If you want to see Garfield very different, see fat cat 3-pack number one. If you love Garfield, This is a must have.

This book features: Mondays, The caped Avenger, The fence, Nermal, Odie, and of course Garfields sick addiction to food .

Enjoy!

If you liked this one I reccomend Fat Cat 3 pack: 4, 5, and 7.

Garfield Fat Cat Three Pack Volume III (No.3) Overview

When one Garfield isn’t enough!
That four-legged fur balloon we affectionately refer to as Garfield always wants more — and he gives as good as he gets in this hilarious volume of belly-busting laughs. So whether he’s chaining himself to the refrigerator, biting Odie’s fingernails, or borrowing Jon’s deodorant, there’s only one thing better than a Garfield collection: three Garfield collections!

Reckonings: The Books of Magic, Volume 3

Reckonings: The Books of Magic, Volume 3 Review

The Books of Magic series follow the life of Tim Hunter, who is destined to be the world’s most powerful magician, but for now is just a teenager. He has recently discovered that all the imaginary children that he had as a child are real and live in an empty lot. He takes his girlfriend, Molly, to visit. She goes into the woods to heed the call of nature and is kidnapped and taken to hell by a group of pink dinosaurs. Hell is not a place of fire and brimstone. Rather it is run like a large and very burocratic corporation. Fire and brimstone is just one torture provided.

Meanwhile Tim Hunter from the future, a powerful magician who has traded his memories away in various confrontations with demons, has realized that life is not all that. He is now trying to raise young Tim Hunter not to be like him.

A mysterious character named Nobody figures heavily in Tim and Molly’s plights. Each must read a short fairy tale in a book. The fairy tales involve a main character who looks and talks just like the main character. The stories end tragically for the main character. In a final confrontation Tim, Molly and grown up Tim end up inside the story read by the demon who has kidnapped Molly and been controlling grown up Tim. Each must play by the rules enough to trick the story without loosing touch with reality and being pulled into the book.

The art style is realistic and well done. The layouts are a little off. Often I read panels out of sequence and the pacing on each page was just a tad off. The art here is fine but the highlight of the book is the twisting and detailed plot.

I recommend that you read the previous book in the series (Summonings) first, but I seriously do recommend that book. Two reasons for that: You will have background so that this book makes more sense. The two books go together and the major plots that were opened in Summonings are resolved here, so reading them together is so much better.

Reckonings: The Books of Magic, Volume 3 Overview

The saga of Timothy Hunter, master Mage-in-training, continues in this fourth collection of sorcery, spells and sprites. The demon Barbatosis up to his old tricks, doing his best to frustrate Tim’s noble intentions. This time it seems he might succeed.
