The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today’s Artists Overview

The most thorough guide to watercolor materials and techniques ever assembled in a single volume, this is the book for anyone working with watercolors, from beginners to experienced artists looking to develop more professional skills. Starting with a comprehensive, up-to-date review of the tools and techniques required to master the art of watercolor, the book then presents detailed lessons in basic drawing skills. Design concepts are explored: line and shape, light and dark, perspective, and composition. All the major watercolor painting techniques are shown: methods for laying washes, preserving white areas, glazing, establishing form, creating textural effects, lifting color, masking, and using resists. With color the driving force behind the author’s whole approach to painting and his distinctive “organic” handling of the medium, color theories and strategies are clearly explained and applied to a wide range of subjects-still life, figures, landscapes, and architecture-some of which pair watercolors with other mediums such as gouache, pastel, and collage. An ongoing reference source, this is a book that watercolorists will turn to again and again for guidance.

The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today’s Artists Review

I have way too many watercolor books (buying WC books is addictive, although not as addictive as buying new colors). This book is one of my absolute favorites, and one I find myself returning to over and over. I am a very big fan of the entire “Materials and Techniques for Today’s Artists” series, and I own their Drawing Book, Pen & Ink Book, Pastel Book, Acrylic Book, and Oil Painting Book.

All of the books in this series seem to follow the same basic format. The first third or so of the book cover materials in great detail. The emphasis is on the types of materials that you need, options available, and characteristics of specific brand names. If you’re a beginning watercolorist lost among all of the brands of brushes, paints, and paper available then this will be a great resource. The middle 3rd of the book focuses on general techniques, followed by a series of discussions related to specific subject matter. The final third focuses on mixed media – and in my opinion this is the area where Dewey’s books really shine. I think he’s a great pastelist and uses pastels and watercolors together to do some amazing stuff.

I view this is a great book for folks that know at least a little bit about watercolor painting and are interested in getting into more depth and detail. I probably wouldn’t recommend the book for absolute beginners, because I think absolute beginners would find the book a little overwhelming. Some initial questions that absolute beginners might ask (like “What colors should I have on a basic palette”) aren’t really addressed until pretty deep into the book. For an absolute beginner, something like Jack Reid’s “Watercolor Basics: Let’s Get Started” or Charles Reid’s “Painting Flowers in Watercolor With Charles Reid” could be a better choice. But if you’ve seen enough of watercolor to know that you want to know a lot more about it, this book is a great resource.

Watercolor: Two Books In One Overview

“Takes…quite an innovative approach and works…well …book is in a die-cut format, with split pages that divide it into two halves. The top half contains 16 watercolor projects of landscapes, water, still lifes, and people. The bottom half is a book of 44 techniques for completing those projects from drawing.”—Library Journal.

Watercolor: Two Books In One Review

This book with spiral wiring and the pages divided, follows a novel way of showing, in the lower half of the pages different techniques, 46 in all, that could be used in water colour painting and the top half of the page showing 16 projects. The projects, 16 in all, are 4 to 6 part pages long and show the development of the painting, listing which of the techniques have been used to produce the different effects.
With the split page format it is easy to flip to the technique described by number, while looking at the project page, and thereby having the information available at a glance.
This is a fun book, but also a serious teaching book providing lots of inspiration.

Watercolor Artist’s Flower Bible (Artist’s Bibles) Review

I almost didn’t purchase this book because of some of the comments in some of the reviews about its size. Very glad that I opted to purchase. The quality of the hard cover, the paper used in the book, the clarity of the illustrations, the great number of examples and, of utmost importance in any book of instruction, IT’S SPIRAL BOUND! I can’t believe anyone who’s interested in painting flowers in watercolor would be disappointed in this book. Great teaching and reference book.

Watercolor in Motion: How to Create Powerful Paintings, Step by Step (Book & DVD) Review

This is one of the best instructional books I have ever bought, and I’ve bought several. I’m new to watercolor, been painting only a few months, but was able to sit down and go through this book and watch the CD with no problems understanding them. I love Birgit’s perspective on flowers, not just your average flowers in a vase, but big, bold, and beautiful florals that take up the whole paper. After reading her book and practicing the techniques, I painted one of my most beautiful paintings ever. It didn’t take weeks or months, but I was able to achieve this in just two days after reading her book. Don’t hesitate to purchase this book if you want to try your hand at painting flowers, for it is priceless. You won’t be sorry.

Watercolor Basics – Painting Flowers Review

Different artists depict flowers differently and not all of them appeal to my eye. I am very much attracted to Sharon Hinckley’s painting style. I am a fan of the bright colors of Gauguin and the vivid up-close and personal semi-abstract flowers of Georgia O’Keefe, and although they both mostly worked in oils, I think Hinckley has merged elements of both of their styles with her own and produced some wonderful watercolor painting.

Watercolor painting is more difficult than oil painting because you can’t really paint over your mistakes without making a mess. Hinckly not only explains how to create flowers step by step (beginning with a discussion of the appropriate supplies and an explanation of color), she shows the reader how to make what she describes as “leaf soup” which forms the basis of the foliage in her watercolors. Hinckly says while many would-be artists can create flowers, most have difficulty with the stuff that grows with flowers, i.e. leaves, stems, and bark. One photo shows Hickley’s palette, “leaf soup” mixture.

There are many books on the market offering instruction on “how to” draw-paint flowers, but if you are fond of the “colorist” approach to painting, you may find it hard to beat the techniques described in WATERCOLOR BASICS, PAINTING FLOWERS.

Watercolor Basics – Painting Flowers Overview

Why stop to just smell the flowers when you can paint them? The instruction in this book makes it fun and easy to create beautiful watercolor daisies, hydrangeas, roses, lilies, poppies . . . all your favorite blooms! You’ll find everything you need to get painting right away–from basic exercises in color choice and composition to techniques for painting leaves, backgrounds, arrangements and outdoor scenes. It’s all explained in simple language with hands-on exercises, easy-to-follow demonstrations and step-by-step projects!

Painting Your Favorite Animals in Pen, Ink and Watercolor Review

This is an excellent book for learning and understanding the structure and emotions of different animals, even if you don’t use pen and ink or watercolor. I have little actual art background and am pretty much self learning; this book is full of detailed information about ears, paws, different ways to show coat texture, etc.

I was very pleasantly surprised at the detail that Claudia Nice covered and would recommend this book highly to anyone truly wishing to paint/sketch, etc, animals with accuracy. She also covers the actual watercolors she uses on the different paintings to give you an idea of how they work together to add depth and interest.

Highly recommend this book to anyone with an eye towards portraying animals in all their glory.

Painting Country Gardens in Watercolor, Pen & Ink Review

I admit it: I am hooked on books by Claudia Nice. Pen & ink can be quite an intense media. Claudia Nice simplifies the techniques and conveys the instruction as only as master can, and does it in her trademark informal, friendly manner. Another aspect I love is her use of watercolor to bring her works to life. The reader gets the treat of two complimentary media in one book: pen & ink and watercolor.
For the beginner, I might recommend starting with her other books before attempting the more advanced exercises and techniques in Painting Country Gardens. The perfect introduction is Sketching Your Favorite Subjects in Pen & Ink, followed by Painting with Watercolor, Pen & Ink, and then perhaps Creating Textures in Pen & Ink with Watercolor.
There are more technical books on pen & ink technique for advanced students, some intimidatingly so; but for the beginning to intermediate artist, no series of books is as valuable for developing sound technique. And certainly no other books are as intimate, casual, and just plain fun as those by Claudia Nice.

Painting Country Gardens in Watercolor, Pen & Ink Overview

Best-selling author Claudia Nice provides all the information artists need to create gorgeous country garden art. She reviews basic watercolor techniques, including glazing and texturing, along with basic pen and ink techniques for producing a variety of line textures.

Readers will find valuable step-by-step demonstrations utilizing a variety of media. They’ll begin by drawing in pencil, then add watercolor and/or pen and ink. In addition to flowers, Claudia shows how to illustrate a variety of leaves, vines, moss, ferns and other country scene details, including rabbits, dogs, statues, birdbaths, wagon wheels, weathered wood arbors, fences and more.

Botanical Illustration in Watercolor (Practical Art Books) Review

This is the best book on botanical illustration I have found. It is suitable for all levels including complete beginners like myself. Although some artistic talent is certainly an asset, closely following the instructions here will come as close as possible to teaching virtually anyone to paint. From drawing to painting, it offers everything you need to create your own beautiful botanical artwork.

The book starts out by helping you choose a subject with practical advice on fruits, vegetables, flowers, mushrooms, bulbs, roots, trees, ferns, vines and more. Then, creating a space to work in and selecting materials from brushes to paper is covered. I love the many excellent tips on mixing colors.

The next section focuses on the many aspects of drawing including setting up a still life, planning the picture and transferring your drawing to watercolor paper. There are detailed step-by-step instructions for drawing a huge variety of botanical subjects including orchids, tulips and foxgloves. I really liked how the author discusses the various shapes of flowers such as round, teacup and tubular and then shows you how to block them out.

The final section covers the painting process. Along with numerous step-by-step demonstrations on painting botanicals there are hints on correcting mistakes, protecting your paper and tips on painting white flowers. Creating the initial washes, adding shadows, shading, layering and highlighting are included as well. To finish your artwork the author gives advice on matting, framing, exhibiting and selling your artwork.

The finished illustrations throughout the book are so beautiful. Each one has information on the kind of paper they are painted on, size and title.

Botanical Illustration in Watercolor (Practical Art Books) Overview

Capture the fascinating beauty of plants. How can an artist create a botanical portrait that is both accurate and aesthetically pleasing? This is the essence of an art form whose charm and universal appeal have made it popular for centuries. Botanical Illustration in Watercolor is the first authoritative, comprehensive book to focus specifically on the materials and techniques of painting plants in watercolor.
